"Have you ever stopped to look at the stars?" Wash leaned back in his chair, staring out the forward windows of Serenity.

"Of course I've seen the stars," Zoe scoffed, wrapping her arms around his neck. She leaned down, resting her chin on his head. "We're up here with them all the time."

"I mean stop and actually look at them. Did you hear about the creation of the world, when she didn't have a sky...."

"And all the stars rushed in and filled her up.... Yeah. Some guy made up that fable, I'm sure."

Wash tipped his head up to look at her face. "What do you mean, 'some guy.'"

"I mean, 'some guy.' Some sex-deprived guy that was obviously too ugly to get a real date with any of the natives. He was so desperate he found dirt erotic."

"I...I take offense at that-for the entire male species."

Zoe smirked, kissing his forehead. "You're so cute when you're upset. You get this confounded look on your face. Like a dog. If you could just cock your head a little more to the side...."

"Ah...."

"How did you resist that Companion the other day?" She kissed his forehead again.

"Why do you always do that?"

"Do what? Kiss you? Because I love you."

He scoffed, shaking his head. "No, change the subject before I have a chance to figure out a comeback."

"I don't have that long to wait."

"What is it, pick on Wash night?"

"Unless you have something else to do."

Wash tapped the controls in front of him. "Fly the ship. Isn't that enough?"

"The ship flies itself, we all know that. We just keep you around because of your good looks."

Wash spun around in his chair. "You are so ornery tonight."

"Maybe you should take this bad girl back to her room and give her a spanking."

"I have half a mind to do just that."

She smiled mischievously. "Bring it on."

He matched her smile. "Well, I suppose the ship could fly itself for a few hours. So long as we're quiet about it. Wouldn't want Serenity to know I'm cheating on her."

"That's the spirit." Zoe took his hands and pulled him out of his chair. "Though I really don't want to know what you and Serenity do up here late at night all alone. Now, about that Companion...."

"Saffron? Are you kidding? She was," he hesitated, "...quaint, nothing more."

"You're becoming awfully fond of that word. Don't ever let me catch you applying it to me."

"You? Never. I reserve 'quaint' to describe only the strangely seductive, culinarily talented, backwater hicks I find stowed away in the cargo hold. Not for a one-of-a-kind woman like you."

"Yeah, right. You didn't answer the question."

"It's simple really. You would have kicked my butt if I'd given in to her." Wash pulled her tight, letting his lips linger on her neck. "That and...I love you."
