Disclaimer: I do not in any way own "Lord of the Rings". That honor belongs
to its creator, the great Tolkien.

A/N: I created this little scene to use with my fellow LotR fan in our
Theatre 1 class for performance day. I hope to redo it at some point, make
it longer, that sort of thing. We'll probably end up doing all kinds of
LotR stuff, so if you all like this, please leave a note saying so, that
way we don't make total fools of ourselves. Thanks!

Dark Wonderings

Based on J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Characters:
ARANIA
CERENTH

Situation:

Set after young Frodo Baggins finds the One Ring of Power. The Fellowship
has been formed, and their journey begun, though they have not yet crossed
the borders into Lothlorien.

Two young women meet in the Prancing Pony, an inn located near Hobbiton,
where they share news and ponder over rumors recently heard.

(One woman approaches the other, who sits quietly at a table.)

CERENTH: Mind some company?

ARANIA: No. Please, sit.

CERENTH: Dreary weather we have on our hands, wouldn't you say?

ARANIA: All days have been dreary for some time now, ever since those
hobbits passed through.

CERENTH: Hobbits? But surely that is normal here?

ARANIA: Of course, we have them in every so often, but these were different.
A shadow seemed to follow them, and ghastly creatures came the same night
they arrived. If I am not mistaken, they attacked the room the little ones
had taken, though they were not in it at the time.

CERENTH: Do you mean the Black Riders?

ARANIA: Yes, you have heard of them?

CERENTH: Seen and heard. The cry that emerged from that dark being was one
I'll never forget. It sent chills up my spine, and struck a cold fear in my
heart.

ARANIA: What less could you expect from servants of the Dark Lord?

CERENTH: The Dark-!

(Stops abruptly as others turn to stare, for her voice had suddenly raised.
Takes caution to speak in low tone, and some - but not all - turn away.)

The Dark Lord! How can you be sure?

ARANIA: I cannot be, but information I have received has led me to that
conclusion.

CERENTH: Thinking back now, strange things have been occurring. Just the
other day, a group of elves passed by! I thought they always stayed in their
cities. Something must be approaching for them to be leaving like this.

ARANIA: Speaking of the elven folk, word is that the king of Rivendell
called a council of some sort. Members of all races were there, and a
fellowship of some sort set out.

CERENTH: Do you know why?

ARANIA: No, but I fear the worst.

(Glances around room again, noticing people studying the two, an evil look
in their eyes.)

I believe we must end this conversation now. See how they stare? His spies
are everywhere.

CERENTH: I agree. It is no longer safe here. I wish you a safe journey.

(Clasp wrists in farewell.)

ARANIA: And you as well.

(Exit on opposite sides of stage.)

A/N: If anyone wants (though I kinda doubt anyone will) to use this as
performance material, or just show it off to others, PLEASE tell me the
results! I would love to hear all about em. Course, your opinions would
totally rawk too! =)
