"Something On Your Mind?" By: AchtungDenny
The sound of screeching tires filled the crisp night air with the smell of freshly burned rubber. As Logan peeled off from the Mansion he was not alone. Lurking in the shadows was someone watching his every move. Waiting for the right time to make their move.
It wasn't uncommon for me to take the ol' bike out for a spin late at night. I needed the time alone, to try and get the memories in my head sorted out, to figure out who had done this to me. Plus there was no smoking on the Mansion grounds.
"Ah, that's much better" resting my helmet on the seat of my bike I took in a deep breath of the fresh night air. That's when I got the scent. The scent was one I knew very well, and they were close by.
Extracting his claws Logan growled "Isn't it past your bedtime Bub?"
"Sorry Logan sir, but Ah thought ya might need the company."
"Oh, and who made you the expert all of the sudden? You should know more than anyone about being alone."
I regretted every word as it left my mouth, but I couldn't help it. I had been a loner my whole life, moving from place to place, and from person to person. Showing compassion was not one of my strong suits. Not that I've never loved anyone, but in this game you can't be soft. Rogue was just a kid though; I needed to make it up to her. I turned to see her hunched over on a tree stump crying.
"I'm sorry kid. I didn't mean it like that" I said as I moved over to where Rogue was sitting. I stood over her watching as she tried to stop the tears and collect herself.
"Ah is sorry for bothering ya Logan sir, Ah will leave ya alone."
As she slowly rose from the stump I took hold of her arm. There I was holding on to this young women, not knowing what to do. She was one of my favorite students that I got to work with. I had taken a liking to her the first day I met her at the Mansion. I couldn't let her walk away after the way I treated her. A sudden feeling of despair came over me, one that I had never felt before.
"Listen kid, I'm sorry. You can stay here if you want too. I didn't mean to be so hard on you. Your company is always welcome."
"Oh Logan" she said as she jumped into my arms.
I stood there for a second dumfounded. Of all the things I was expecting this was not one of them. Not sure what to do, I put my arms around her and pulled her closer to me. I just stood there holding her close to me, keeping her safe and warm. Here was this proud young lady bawling her eyes out in my arms. I've played the hero many times in my life, but this time I was beaten. The tough guy act was falling apart.
"It'll be ok kid. I promise you," I said as I slowly rubbed my fingers through her hair. "I can't imagine what you're going through. You know you have a lot of people that care about you at the school, and we are all here for you no matter what."
I smiled down at her trying to reassure her, that I meant what I said. That's when her eyes locked onto mine. I could see the pain and longing in them. The longing to say something that she was too afraid to say. In all my years I had never seen that look before. I had been with many women before, but none so young and innocent as Rogue. Confusion was setting into my head. What was she thinking? Why did she really come here?
"Hey, is there something on your mind?"
She just kept looking at me, and that's when the tears started streaming down her face. She opened her mouth to speak, then turned away. After a minute she looked back up at me.
"Logan" as she reached a gloved hand up to touch my face "Ah.Ah.love ya."
