Tom slipped between the parked cars, heart pounding. His eyes darted around looking any sign of pursuit. Apparently Jane's brother had decided his betrayal deserved a very harsh response.
Tom thought about just how close he had come to dying today. That flake had been trailing along after him in the tank. He had followed Tom down back alleys, half the length of Dega Street, and even at one point trailed him to that ridiculous giant strawberry.
Every time Tom had tried to call for help or thought he was safe he'd hear the rumble of the tank and the race would resume. Then finally he had been caught. The avenger had been bearing down on him when suddenly he had screamed something about not missing a show and not losing the woman he loved for the likes of Tom and something that sounded an awful lot like "I'll catch you later."
It took more than an hour of walking through the warehouse district to find a working phone. The first two had been out of order and the last one had what looked to be four or five packs of chewed gum stuck to the handset. He reached for his wallet to retrieve a quarter for the call, and then he realized the damn thing must have fallen out when he had climbed a fence to get away. Tom cursed under his breath and started punching in his calling card code when suddenly the world brightened considerably.
"I told you I would catch you later." Wind called out as he began to rev the tank's engine." Now you'll see what happens to people who cheat on a Lane."
