In a city called New York many years ago, two different lives were led by two very different people. Then they met and something beautiful began.
~*~*~*~
Cheers erupted from all around her. The glittering girl pranced around the stage, every action dramatic. Her long dark locks fell gracefully over her bare shoulders. Her costume was tailored to perfection, accentuating everything that should be.
She stood at the front of the stage and held her arms above her head, then bowed deep. She blew a kiss goodbye to her adoring audience and exited.
Whispers mingled with the music, her audience praised her. They talked of how beautiful she was, how lovely that girl. They left the great hall murmuring pleasant words about her performance.
Tamsin sat quietly in her small dressing room behind the empty stage. Removing all the glamorous makeup and wigs, every feather, bead, diamond and shimmering accessory disappeared. She put her simple yet elegant dress back on, the latest style.
Tamsin was a performer. The one every girl wanted to be. She had a stage presence so appealing, a beauty so undeniable, and a charm all her own. The boys loved her; the girls either loathed or admired her.
And she loved it. She was so young at only sixteen, but so popular among the younger crowds. She sang at the local Hall after being taken in by Medda, the owner and a performer at the Hall.
Though Tamsin led a life of extravagant, she did not have every thing she could ever want. She longed for love and a true friendship. How could she have known there was another girl who wanted just the same?
~*~*~
She was plain. Simple and poor, a common girl in the dreary scenery of lower New York.
Her family was small, a mother, father, brother and herself. Her common brown hair hung in limp strands, her gray eyes held no spark or charm. She was just another ragged girl who pined for adventure and wealth.
She spent her dull days in the mill, winding yarn onto the endless spools for the spinners to weave into squares of fabric. Day after day of a few cents and bags of yarn. The stifling heat inside the factory often left her feeling drowsy and exhausted no matter how much effort she exhorted. Mother and Father depended on her pay to keep them in food and shelter, but it was so hard. She wanted to have people admire her and not have to lift a finger, for once.
Evelyn had nothing to build a dream on, she would watch the richly dressed girls hurry to their voice lessons, learning to sing like angels to drifting music.
Evelyn led the kind of live people dread. A working class girl with no money, no exquisite personality and certainly no stunning appearances. Was there anything to look forward to? She prayed each night on the blinking stars hidden by filthy smog for something, anything, to change her life for the better.
Her prayers would be answered sooner than she knew.
~*~*~
And in the middle of two very different girls lives, a change for the better would occur. The story of Tamsin & Evelyn began.
-----From Derby: YES, there ARE newsies in this story! They'll come in shortly ^___^
