If At First-Prologue

Cool wind blew through the trees of Kokoro no Tenshi Cemetery, ruffling the hair of a girl who stood at a freshly buried grave.  Red and gold leaves formed dancing patterns in the air as the girl hugged her arms to her chest and knelt to place flowers at the base of the tombstone.  She stayed in a kneeling position for several minutes, bowing her head in grief.  The black wool material of her dress formed a small tent around her slight form.

"Kit, it's getting late."  A young man walked up behind her.  When the girl didn't reply, he sighed and eased himself into a crouch.  They sat in reverent silence until the boy spoke up again.

            "Daijobu desu ka?"

The girl raised her head and nodded once, twice, three times.  Her hand came up to brush across watering eyes.  "Daijobu desu."

Several unchecked tears fell down the boy's open face.  He didn't seem to notice them as he reached out and traced the lines on the gravestone with his index finger.  Once he had come to the engraved last name, his finger stopped abruptly and he drew his hand back.  Frown lines appeared on his forehead, and his mouth twisted down.  He stood up and tucked too-long hair behind his ears, a nervous gesture that was louder than the quiet around them.

The girl looked up into the face of her older brother, reading the intense sorrow in his amethyst eyes.  Wiping her face once more, she stood up as well and took his hand in hers.  Together they walked out of the cemetery, unaware of the brown eyes that followed their departure.

"Things will be different now, ne Niisan?"

            "Hai, Aya-chan.  Very different indeed."
