A Sirius Secret: Prologue
The sky was overcast, the trees bare, and the ground was covered in pure, pristine, untrodden snow. It was a silent, gray winter day, one that would inspire anyone to take a walk in the beautiful scenery. Hermione Granger was walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forest, deep in thought, black cloak trailing behind her, her feet crunching softly in the snow, crystals of ice drifting lazily into her mahogany brown curls. She often took walks like this on the Hogwarts grounds when the clamorous common room became unbearable or when her stifling workload began to take its toll. She strolled along, immersed deep in thought, when a quick snap of twigs and crunch of leaves shook her out of her reverie. Hermione's hands quickly flew to pocket and grasped for her wand. These days, with Voldemort back, no one went without his or her wand. It was just stupid not to. Taking the fake Mad-Eye Moody's words into stride, constant vigilance was now practiced among Hogwarts' staff and students. You couldn't be too careful.
Hermione hesitated, and then stepped silently into the forest, eyes darting from tree to tree. After searching a bit, she turned back around to leave, convinced it was just an animal, or even a lone centaur, when she heard a soft bark. Standing about fifteen feet away in the brush was a massive shaggy black dog with dark brown eyes. She froze. She would know that dog anywhere! "Snuffles?" she asked incredulously. The large, black dog made a motion as if he wanted her to follow him and set off down a dirt path. Hermione followed, wondering what "Snuffles" was doing at Hogwarts and where he was leading her. He stopped in a small dirt clearing and turned, then changed into human form. Standing before her was one very ragged, grubby, not to mention skinny, Sirius Black with a wayward expression on his face. Hermione moved to embrace him and said, "What on earth are you doing here?! I thought you were in hiding someplace south! You could be.." "Hermione, " he whispered, "I had to bring us someplace safe, out-of-view from the castle. It's good to see you. How are Harry and Ron?" "They're fine," she replied quickly, "but what I really want to know is how are you? Why are you here?" "I cannot tell you that yet," he started, "it isn't the time, but I need you to take a message to Dumbledore and to Harry.."
A/N: Very, very short, I know, but it's a prologue. Sorry about the cliffhanger, I realize how much people hate those, but I really don't know where I want to take this at all. If the feedback's good, I guess I'll continue.
