She Smiled

By Meg Shewell

The sky has lost its color

The sun has turned to gray

At least that's how it feels to me

Whenever you're away

I crawl up in the corner

To watch the minutes pass

Each one brings me closer to

The time you're coming back

Obi-wan was worried – more then usual. He was curled up in a chair at the Healer's, tightly clutching Sari's hand. Bruck – the imbecile – has struck her with his lightsaber when she stopped him from harming Obi-Wan.

I can't take the distance

I can't take the miles

I can't take the time 'til I next see you smile

I can't take the distance

And I'm not ashamed

That with every breath I take I'm calling your name

"Sari…Sari…please, you have to wake up. Bruck can't hurt you anymore, I promise," Obi-Wan cried. The Healers were worried too. They were afraid if she didn't wake up soon that she would slip into a coma. Obi-Wan was practically begging Sari to wake up.

I still believe my feelings

But sometimes I feel too much

I make believe you're close to me

But it ain't close enough

Not nearly close enough

I can't take the distance

I can't take the miles

I can't take the time 'til I next see you smile

And I'm not ashamed

That with every breath I take I'm calling your name

Obi-Wan was sobbing now, and his tears poured down his cheeks. "Please Sari," he begged, "please come back to me. I need you." He clutched her hand tighter, willing her to wake up. "Please…please…please," he repeated over and over as he slowly fell asleep.

I'd brave fire

And I'd brave rain

To be by your side

I'd do anything

I will go the distance

I will go the miles

That's how much you mean to me

'Cause I can't take the distance

Qui-Gon Jinn walked into the Healers, a blanket draped over one arm. He smiled slightly for a moment, as was his way, but frowned again at the paleness of Sari's face and the tears tracks that marked Obi-Wan's face. He covered Obi-Wan with the blanket, then turned to Sari. //You need to come back to the land of the living soon, Young One. For everyone's sanity.// Then he left.

I can't take these miles

I can't take the time 'til I next see you smile

I can't take the distance

And I'm not ashamed

That with every breath I take I'm calling your name

But I can't take the distance

Obi-Wan slowly opened his eyes as the morning light filtered into the room. He shook his head as if to clear it, and looked down at his right-hand. It was still clutching Sari's hand. He turned his head to see if any change had occurred during the night and gasped. Sari was looking at him. Then she did something he feared he might never see again –

She smiled.
