On a lonely sidewalk on an empty street

A silent girl makes a lonely journey

An empty soul wanders down the road home

Her stride is strong but her heart is weary

Her only link to people is a machine

But she knows her efforts are in vain

For unwanted by her peers is she seen

She enters the lift and it starts with a kick

She is almost back in to her empty apartment

She thinks on how this makes her feel so sick

The lift jolts to a stop and she exits and closes its door

Now on her floor, she takes those last steps home

She does not spare her door's mailbox even simple a glance

But instead she opens her door, she is not alone

She looks at the table and sees school papers and home work

This is why they came, they were doing as they were told

Why else would anyone come to see her

Who would wish to be near one so cold

Touji stood now, wanting to leave he walked from his chair

But Shinji, holding a bag of garbage in one hand, smiled warmly at her

As warmth radiated from his face she could not help but to stair

He apologized for simply walking in to her apartment

And said that while waiting he had picked up her room's debris

She blushed at him, and stuttered out thanks

She was near trembling, but inside she could feel her heart's ease

He took her gratitude warmly as she stood there with eyes wide and cheeks blushing

He smiled again at her once more and with that he left with his friend

After he left she continued to stand there, she wished for him to return

She wished that short-lived moment of happiness not to have had to end

Minutes went by and she lay down as she was weary

She thought about her expression of gratitude she had shown

A common thing for all the other girls her age

But for her it was completely unknown

She wondered how she, the doll of NERV, could have such feelings

She wondered what might happen if she tried to live for things other than NERV

To try to live another way than as she had would mean risking the commanders fury

She new the commander would say that she would receive what she would deserve

Perhaps, she thought, but how could she continue to live alone

This life I have is empty and bare, no longer acceptable to me

Even though this life is all that I have ever known

She sighed, and decided to think of a happier and more pleasant thing

Like the time she had saved his life and in turn he had saved her

When he asked for her to smile, and she thought her soul would sing

From this image she drew comfort, and a small smile unfolded on her face

With the thought of Ikari on her mind, she decided it was time for rest

The Commander and his son may both be part of her life

But of the two of those lilim, she new that the younger was the best

Tomorrow was another day, and she new that it would be difficult

But for the one who truly cared for her mind, heart, and soul

She new that they were destined to complete each other

And that someday the two of them would make each other whole.
