The Psychic's Apprentice
Prologue-Breaks in the Mind
A small orb of blue energy floated slowly away from me. I could see it, though my eyes were closed. Deep pressure in the back of my mind intensified at every inch the orb gained. My breaths were deep and long, full and true. I was centered... I was strong... I would not lose concentration! I was sure I would not, but at the same time, I knew I would.
The orb stopped its advance and I was aware of it. It slowly began to disappear. I reached out to it with my mind, though I knew it was pointless. I would not regain my orb of complete and perfect strength again today, so why did I try to bring it back? Why did I go against my knowledge? Why did I go against the truth? Against destiny?
Almost as if a knife plunged through my brain and straight down to my heart, my concentration faultered and my mental prowess shattered. I fell to the cold gym floor, gasping. The orb faded completely from existance-the orb my mind had conjured up with pure, centered thoughts.
"Good job, young apprentice," muttered the voice of my Mistress. Her voice sounded far off, like an echo on cavern walls. I was aware of her presence, but at the same time I wasn't. She seemed to be a memory, slowly being remembered and coming back into focus. Her cold, still, green eyes we fixed onto me but I could feel her searching my mind carefully. Searching... feeling... tapping into my mentality and relaxing it gently. The feel of her strong, yet gentle, mind reaching into mine calmed me. "That is enough training for today."
I was once again aware of everything physical and was breathing regularly. I heard her footsteps on the hard floor slowly die out before I looked up. I could feel the large beads of sweat dripping from my thick brown hair down my face, neck, back and chest. I could feel my heart, beating wildly to replenish the blood I had rationed from my veins to keep up the power of my mind. I then felt another mind tap into mine. The mind that had given me these strange powers. The mind... that would never leave mine for the rest of my life.
'Well done, Master.'
