Midnight

Hermione surpressed a yawn. It was already past midnight, as she returned to the Gryffindor commonroom. Professor McGonnagal had granted her permission to use the school library outside the usual opening hours over the hollidays -for further research on advanced transfiguration.

The commonroom was dimly lit by the orange glow of the fireplace, casting ghostly shadows everywhere. Hermione smiled as she saw the sleeping forms of her two best friends lying on the sofas closest to the fire. She picked up two blankets and turned towards Ron, who was closest to her. He lay there, outstretched, his left arm and leg dangling from the sofa and snored. Harry slept on the sofa opposit of him. Hermione cautiosly took off his glasses, putting them on the nearest table. Murmuring something about a Quidditch match, he snuggled into the blanket.

The girl sighed as she watched the two teenage boys sleeping peacefully. She loved both of them, but only as good friends, in fact the best she'd ever had. But everybody, be it some Slytherin or even the girls she shared her dormitory with, kept implying that there was more between the threesome. Once she was said to go out with Ron, the next time she was said to having kissed Harry. Nobody believed her that there was nothing going on with either of the boys.

She sighed again, then, carefully as not to wake up her friends, she turned towards the stairs which lead to the girls' dormitory and went to her room. The other Gryffindor 6th years had all gone home over christmas, leaving the dormitory deserted.

On the window-still sat a dark owl, a piece of parchment tied to her leg. Swiftly Hermione untied it and gave the owl some bread, before she took off into the night. Hermione changed into her pyjamas and sat down on her bed, unfolding the letter. As she read it a smile crept on her face, and, after reading it a second time, she lay it on her bedside table and extinguished the light.

Soon she had fallen into a peacefull slumber, as outsides the first snowflakes fell onto the frozen ground.
