Inspired by the game, I've decided to write a fic based on its characters. This is my own take on Kingdom Hearts, and loosely follows the storyline. Keyword: loosely. This game has some sort of effect on me, because this is the 2nd fic I've started after watching KH which is more action-type than just plain waff. There's something strange going on here...

Sadly, none of the characters are mine. They're owned by either SquareSoft and Disney (you'll have to figure out who because I'm not even sure who I'll include in this story), and I have only the privilege of enjoyment. Of course, that's better than nothing. Enough said. Enjoy the story!

The Quest of the Key
Chapter 1: The Beginning

The breeze was gentle; the waves lapped at the side of the raft lightly. Sora stood by the mast, staring out at the vast ocean in awe. The weather was perfect, and they were making good time. He turned to his two companions, Kairi and Riku, who were standing a little ways behind.

"I wonder where we're headed."

Sora looked at Kairi, smiling. "Yeah. This is so exciting, going off on an adventure." His eyes shone with anticipation. The girl beside him giggled slightly, and Sora gave her a puzzled frown. "What's so funny, Kairi?"

"You are, Sora. You've always dreamed of travelling and now that we are, you're still dreaming." Kairi giggled again.

"Sora's always dreaming, there's no question about that." Sora and Kairi turned to the boy sitting by the oar.

"Are you on Kairi's side or mine, Riku?" Sora demanded, teasingly.

"Kairi's side, of course," Riku replied with a flip of his light gray hair. "And to answer your question, Kairi, we're headed southwest. You can tell by the location of the sun." He pointed above towards the unblinking sun.

Sora shielded his eyes as he glanced up. "Well," he continued, sitting down. "I still can't wait to arrive somewhere and explore."

"Neither can I," Kairi replied, sitting down next to Sora. "Do you think it'll be nicer than Destiny Island?" she asked almost wistfully.

Sora frowned at the question. "I don't know. I don't think anything is like Destiny Island. Destiny Island is home."

Kairi nodded her head in agreement, before turning to Riku while he navigated the raft through the calm waters. "Come on, can't you go any faster?" she asked, poking Riku in the arm.

"Why don't you come try rowing for a while?" Riku challenged in response.

Kairi giggled, shaking her head. "No way! I'll have to do it later anyway." She smiled, looking up at Sora. "You, too, Sora. So don't think you can get out of rowing. Sora? Sora, are you listening? Sora-"

"Sora!"

Sora sat up with a start, and found himself staring into a pair of clear ocean-blue eyes. Blushing violently, he scooted back to see Kairi squatting in front of him on the beach. Kairi giggled. "I knew I'd find you here. You're so lazy! Were you dreaming again?"

"I, uh..." Sora stuttered.

Kairi giggled again. "You were, weren't you? What about?" She moved to sit beside him.

"Getting off this island, I guess. We were on the raft, sailing to an unknown destination." Sora lay back in the sand.

"Still have your head in the clouds, Sora?" Sora twisted his head around to see Riku approaching. "We'll be going in a day, so it won't be a dream anymore."

"Yeah, Sora. What are you going to dream about after that?" Kairi asked, nudging him.

"I'll dream about the places we'll see then; I can't wait!"

Riku chuckled, staring off towards the ocean. "I don't think any of us can."
