Chapter One
Duo sighed and leant back tugging at his collar in an effort to loosen it. The room was stifling because the air conditioning had broken several hours ago. He peered blankly at the screen which everyone else in the room was paying rapt attention to.
The screen blinked briefly and finally cleared to show a 3D representation of Earth Sphere. Duo tore his longing gaze away from the blissfully partially open window to tune into what was being said.
"With the neutralisation of OZ and now White Fang, peace seems attainable. However, there are several factors that, if left unresolved, could threaten this peace. The first and main problem is the situation in Saudi Arabia."
Duo's head jerked up at the mention of Arabia and he turned his gaze to watch Quatre. The slim blonde was watching the screen closely, a slight frown present on his features and slightly wide eyes, but other than those, no expression to show what his feelings were. Duo's attention was pulled back to Lady Une as she continued.
Lady Une pointed to the screen and Duo saw that it had been enlarged to encompass Asia in it entirety. "Rumours are that the Arabian citizens are less than happy with their current circumstances. The people are oppressed by their government for both financial and military reasons, the latter of which are currently unknown to us. In short, the situation could turn into a rebellion."
Duo's gaze once again turned to Quatre to see that all emotion had carefully been wiped from his face. But, looking into the Arabian's eyes, Duo saw a grey storm of fury and something akin to guilt. _Well, it is said that the eyes are the portal to the soul. But why is he feeling guilty? _The answer to that, the American reasoned, was simply the Arabian's personality. If one let him, he'd shoulder his own guilt, your guilt, your best friend's guilt and the stranger down the lane's guilt.
Beside him Heero spoke abruptly pulling him out his thoughts. "Why should that bother us? True, the Preventer's try to stop these kind of uprisings, but a petty civil war is hardly call for a large scale operation."
Duo smirked and turned to see how Lady Une was going to answer _that_ one. Lady Une simply nodded before continuing. "Normally, I'd agree with you Heero. However, these circumstances are unique. Several months ago, our scouts caught wind of a secret nuclear base unknown to the Arabian Government. With nuclear technology and the natural deposits of plutonium found in the south there is a distinct possibility that they are creating nuclear weapons."
Duo frowned and his voice, when he spoke, contained unchecked again. "Why would they do that? The war's over!"
Heero and Wufei sighed and shook their heads if it should be perfectly obvious. Trowa displayed his usual lack of emotions and Quatre just gave him a slight smile. Duo had a feeling he had just exhibitioned his ignorance of certain situations. _And it wouldn't be the first time_ he reflected sourly.
Lady Une coughed politely before answering Duo's question. "For many Arabian's, conditions were better during the war. They had free reign with weapons and the like. Now, with the abolition of weapons, the government oppresses them. So they build more weapons in hopes to create a new war."
Duo glared at the screen as if it was capable of the start of a new war. "Crazy… completely nuts!" He looked around the room to see that the other pilots were nodding silently in agreement but Duo was startled by the cold fury he saw in Quatre's cerulean eyes.
"The Arabian government has contacted me and requested that we look into the possibility of a nuclear base. Three days ago, the rebels took the city of Khamis Mushayt where the base is believed to be located. Because of this new development, however, a large scale operation is obsolete. We don't want civilian casualties. We need a small unit preferably highly trained in strategic analysis, stealth operations and the detonation of arms." She finished and suddenly flushed slightly.
Duo groaned as he realised where this conversation was headed. He absently wondered why he hadn't seen it coming from a mile off. Heero, too, had appeared to have realised because the infamous death glare was fixed firmly on Lady Une who shifted uncomfortably. Surprisingly enough, it was Trowa who spoke.
"If you wanted our help, why not ask us straight out?" he asked quietly.
The other members on the Preventer's council, including Sally Po, shifted uneasily. Heero smirked slightly before speaking.
"Mission accepted." Two small words, yet words that sent sighs of relief throughout the entire room. Duo's eyes widened in surprise. _Geez, are they really that scared of us?_ He frowned. Come to think of it, they probably were. It wasn't too long ago they'd been terrorists at the top of the 'wanted' list.
Lady Une smiled and nodded appreciatively. She had been afraid that they would decline. _After all, who knows what they might do?_ They were all unpredictable and each was deadly in his own way. Heero and Wufei had shown numerous Preventer soldiers on several occasions that brute strength wasn't going to keep you alive. Several of the current inhabitants of the hospital were the results of these small brawls. And neither boy had so much as a scratch on them.
And that Duo…she winced inwardly at the havoc he's caused with the main computer frame last week when he'd hacked into it. They hadn't been able to get it back up and running for hours and when they had, the first thing they had seen was a cowled figure waving a scythe around and laughing hysterically. How he'd managed to even get into the main computer room was beyond her.
Trowa, on the other hand was the complete opposite to Duo. While most soldiers enjoyed Duo's pranks and liked his company they fairly fled when Trowa rounded the corner. That emotionless predatory gaze still sent shivers down her spine whenever she saw it. He even moved like a cat, seemingly ready to pounce at any moment.
And Quatre…she mentally shook her head. He was perhaps more of an enigma than the others. He was well-known and liked by the soldiers. He was friendly to everyone but when he or his friends were threatened he could be just as deadly accurate with his throws as Heero. The soldier that was the proof of this was still in the hospital she believed. And when it came to military tactics…she'd never known such a ruthless and deadly mind. His plans were carefully laid down to the most precise detail taking everything into consideration and yet he was still able to change them at the drop of a hat if something unexpected came up. As long as she had known him, not a single plan of his had failed and he was regarded with a sort of grudging respect by the soldiers, even herself. Of course, Quatre was completely oblivious to this.
With a start, she realised that everyone was watching her expectantly. _I wonder how long I've just been standing here doing nothing?_ She continued hurriedly.
"Thank you Heero. We've managed to contact a guide. He'll meet you I the capitol Riyadh, code word zero. He'll take you south through the desert to Khamis Mushayt. Rendezvous is in just under eight hours so you'll need to be on the shuttle within the hour. You have forty minutes to get everything together and meet in the shuttle launch bay. Any questions?"
Duo leant back. "Yeah. Why do we have to trek through the desert huh? Can't we land on the roof or something?"
Lady Une rolled her eyes. "To avoid detection Duo. They're hardly going to not gun down a foreign aircraft landing on their front doorstep especially when they've forbidden the launching and landing of any aircraft within the area." Duo pouted and leant further back into his chair. "Any more questions?" No one said anything. "Good. Is there anything you'd like to add Quatre?"
Duo immediately noticed she was handing control of the mission to Quatre. Well, it made sense. He was, effectively, their leader and besides he was the one who knew the most about Arabia. It was after all his homeland even if he hadn't spent that much time there. Mind you he was practically living with the Maganacs at their desert base.
Quatre frowned briefly before answering. "Just to take both warm and cool clothes. The temperature can reach freezing at night. And you'll want to wear white in the day. Oh, and take a knife. You'll need it," he smirked at the curious glances shot his way. "Trust me," he said softly. He turned away from the other pilots and spoke to Lady Une. "Lady Une, may I speak with you?"
Duo watched, puzzled as Lady Une nodded and she and Quatre retreated to the corner where they began to have a hurried conversation. The other pilots rose and headed for the exit. Wufei glanced briefly at Quatre and Lady Une before exiting.
"I wonder what Quatre's talking about."
Trowa continued walking as he headed for his quarters. "I don't know. But whatever it was he was angry."
Duo nodded. _But I wonder who he's angry at? Probably himself for some obscure reason_ Duo stole a peek at Trowa and was surprised to see the usually impassive face filled with confusion and a hint of concern. He smirked inwardly. _Looks like unibang boy's got more feelings for blondie than he's letting on…_
Duo cracked his knuckles and put his heads behind his head. "Personally I think this is going to be a waste of time. All we'll find in that big ole sand pit is a bunch of damn big spiders, gobbing camels and a bad case of sunburn. Still, we'll be able to bury Wufei in the sand won't we?"
Wufei glared at Duo. "Shut up Maxwell!" he spun on his heel and headed for his quarters. Duo turned to the other two. Both had tiny smiles curving their lips. Duo shook his head. _We must be going soft. Maybe this mission will do us some good after all_
With that, he turned and headed off to his own room. No matter what Quatre said, there was no way he was going to wear anything but his priest's outfit. He squashed the annoying part of his mind that had just told him he was going to be fried.
A/N Well, there's the first chapter. Please review and tell me what you think . It's a little short but there was really no-where else I could end it.
In future chapters expect plenty of Duo frying, maddening camels and lots of calls for Heero from Relena.
