Sandy hopped off the back seat of the fire truck as it slowly pulled into
the station. She stumbled slightly as she landed; the truck had not stopped
moving. As she pulled off her helmet, her long braided hair fell down her
back. She removed her heavy brownish-yellow coat, and her over-pants of the
same colour. The jacket, she hung on the hook on the wall of the firehouse,
but the pants fell to the floor unnoticed. She felt a sharp punch on her
arm. She was staring off into space, the punch brought her back to reality.
A colleague congratulated her on a job well done. It was a two alarm fire
in a warehouse. Not something you'd see everyday, even in Chicago. Sandy
replied no more to him then a standard reply.
Sandy had something on her mind. It was something that had kept her up all night, and she was very anxious and on edge. She walked up the stairs into the staff room of the firehouse, and sat on a chair at a round table. Two of her co-workers were heating up an obscene amount of canned ravioli, and offered her some. Although she was hungry, the scent made her nauseous. "No, thanks." She replied, she couldn't eat now
She got the phone call yesterday from an excited Kerry. She'll never forget Kerry's words. They were nervous, and far apart. "I don't' think it's anything. I don't want you to get excited. but. Sandy. Honey, I'm two weeks late." Usually those are words of panic from a woman to a man, but in this relationship, they were words of utter joy.
An uneventful hour passed. It was now 7:00 PM, and after a 12 hour shift, Sandy was finished at work. She said a quick goodbye to the men on her team, and raced to her car. She got in, and drove far too fast to Kerry's place.
The petite red-head opened the door, and saw her love in the hall. They greeted each other with a nervous hug. Sandy couldn't remember the last time she was so nervous. Kerry spoke: "I did it this morning. and then I put it away. I did two of them, two different ones, but from the same sample. Just in case one doesn't work, you know. I locked them in the cupboard and went out all day so I wouldn't look at them. I thought we could find out together. I mean, if that's ok."
Sandy smiled, and remembered why she loves this woman. Always thinking of others. Sandy pulled Kerry into an embrace, kissed her, then they stood, in each other's arms for a long time. Finally, Sandy broke the embrace, took Kerry's hand in hers, and together, they walked to the bathroom cupboard.
