Tyr and Beka fall in love over a period of time, but they only kiss,
nothing else. Beka knows that she could never be one of any number of
wives, and Tyr is committed to rebuilding his Pride.
Just before Tyr takes his second First wife, he and Beka practise in the gym. Beka is not in her usual teasing mood. In fact, she seems really upset, determined to fight Tyr for real. He realizes something is up, and as she pushes him to fight her, he puts a stop to it. She is lying on her back, with Tyr using some of his great weight to pin her to the floor. Their eyes meet, and he sees the pain she is feeling, and their shared distress leads them to a passionate kiss. He partially unzips her blouse, and pushes it off one shoulder and starts kissing her shoulder blade. He realizes something is wrong because she is shaking, and he looks at her face; she is crying. Overcome by their shared grief, he sits up, taking her with him, leans back against the wall and gathers her to him. She seems very small against his chest, and she sobs her eyes out for a minute. When she tries to get up, Tyr does not look at her, and he does not release her. She pleads with him quietly, asking him to let her go, and just as quietly he asks her to stay just one minute longer. The scene ends with Beka still curled against him, no longer crying, and Tyr with his arm wrapped tightly around her, still not looking at her.
