A New pet for Harry
"Hedwig, no" Harry's mind flashed blurred visions of snow white feathers smothered in blood the screams of the aero-plane engine and the cries of a dying bird. "No!" Harry say up-right, he knew that this was no dream, though this event happened but a month ago. Harry wiped a tear from his eye, he was surprised he still had tears left inside him. His glasses caught the glint from the moon, it was early morning he could still hear the snoring from Dudley's room. "its no use" he thought to himself "I cant sleep when I feel the way I do" in fact harry hadn't had a proper night's sleep since the incident. He glanced towards his second-hand desk which Vernon found dumped outside his office. All along the chipped oak-wood table laid about a dozen sympathy cards and an empty cage, even the sight of loving words could make him feel any better, inside Harry felt as empty as Hedwig's cage. Harry tip-toed towards his open window, he reached for a roll of parchment and picked up a fountain pen, he couldn't use quill's the sight of a feather would bring back all his pain. He was trying to write to Sirius, who managed to send him a card, which is pretty impressive considering he has to write using his paws. Harry just couldn't find the words, inside his head all that was happening was the horrible event over and over again. A plane was heard overhead, Harry looked up the shrieks of Hedwig rolled around in his head. In the end Harry put down the pen after feebly scrawling. It was hard to send a letter its how hedwig died, he'd have to borrow an owl from the post-office in Diagon Alley "thanks for the card Sirius, it was very comforting" Harry just sat on the window-sill and stared at the cage gently tears fell down his face. He thought about all the good things Hedwig did for him.....BEEP BEEP!!!! Harry looked alert it was Dudley's alarm "7 already?" he asked himself, "I better-" Harry was cut off, in the distance he saw a huge brown barn-owl carrying a purple letter. Harry recognized the Crest, it was from Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry tore it open, perhaps it was about Voldemort. Or perhaps they caught Sirius, it wasn't just a list of things for the next school year. Harry sighed he put the envelope down but as it fell, another note fell out. Harry read it, it read Harry, I heard about Hedwig I express deepest sympathies, that is why therefore I am sending another pet, this is not to replace Hedwig in any way, just to get you through the school year, I understand you already know this particular bird so there will be no problem. I just hope you get as much joy from it as I have. Albus Dumbledore
"What does he mean, I know this bird, the only bird I know is- Fawkes!" Harry hadn't noticed the bright red bird fly through his window, there it stood proudly. "Oh yes," he said "I'll find you most useful I think"
