Inuyasha sighed. Another day without Kagome, and as usual he was sulking in a tree. Shit…I hate this. He remembered when Myouga had told him that inu youkai would sometimes die of loneliness or go insane if they lost their mate. While Kagome wasn't his mate… he liked to think of her like that. Closing his eyes he imagined Kagome in his red haori blushing slightly, her eyes shining in the moonlight night… suddenly his reverie was broken by the sound of crying. From the sound of it, it was the kitsune brat. He leapt down from his position in the tree and sought out the source of the sound. Inuyasha hated the sound of women and children crying. It always made him feel guilty, even if he had nothing to do with it. After about 30 seconds of jumping around, he found Shippo. "Oi, Shippo, why are you crying?" he asked softly,

"Tonight… this is the anniversary of when Hiten and Manten killed my parents. I was alone for nearly a month… I didn't know what to do and…" responded the fox cub, teary eyed.

"Sorry… but are you okay?" he asked awkwardly. He had very little experience in dealing with children.

"Yeah, now that I met you and Kagome. You're like my big brother and big sister." This brought a fresh wave of tears from the kitsune. Inuyasha felt sorry for the kitsune, a change from the usual annoyance.

"You know… I lost my parents when I was young too. My father died when I was too young to remember and my mother died when I was only 10. If you think you had it hard for that month… try being a hanyou. I was alone for over 20 years. I was constantly hunted by full youkai and shunned by humans. I couldn't stay in any one place for the longest time. After a while I heard the rumors of the Shikon no Tama. I thought… I thought if I could just turn into a full youkai I could find a home. I wouldn't be picked on any more. Human's wouldn't bother me… but then I met Kikyo and…" he shook his head, a single tear squeezing itself from his closed eyelids. "Don't worry, you have me, Kagome, Sango, Miroku, hell even Myouga-jiji. We'll all take care of you. It's all right to mourn for your parents, but don't let it take over your life. But also remember them, and take your memories of them with you wherever you go. But never fear that you'll have to be alone. Your niisan will take care of you."

"Inuyasha…"

"Hai?"

"Thanks."

"Your welcome. But Shippo…"

"What niisan?"

"If you tell anyone about this, I'll rip your lungs out." he said with a smile.

That made the kitsune grin back. "Alright."

Kagome waited until Inuyasha was gone for over a minute before she tried sneaking away. She couldn't fool the kitsune youkai however.

"Kagome, how long have you been there?" he asked with a small sniff at the end.

"I heard you crying and I came over to see why, but Inuyasha jumped down and started talking and well…."

The kitsune smiled. "I told you he could be nice."

Kagome smiled back. "I know Shippo, I know." This was the reason she loved Inuyasha. He was violent and jealous, and usually selfish but…

"You know Kagome… he would make a good 'tousan." he said sneakily.

Kagome just blushed slightly and walked away.
