In Jane's defense, the hallways of the building all looked the same to him. It also didn't help that said building was huge, which meant a lot of identical hallways and therefore a higher chance of becoming lost. Which, of course, was what happened to Jane. He had just run off to the vending machine for one second to get a chocolate bar, yet when he came back, there was a distinct lack of Lisbon and Cho. Jane went in the direction he thought they had gone, only to find out he had gone in the wrong direction.
That was proven by him seeing one of the suspects, a man named Toby Watts, standing there trying to hide a bloody knife in a bag.
They locked eyes, and immediately Watts gave up with hiding the knife in favor of trying to kill Jane instead.
Jane dodged backward, but the knife came way too close to his skin for comfort, so he began running further down the hallway. Watts raced after him. Jane wondered about the lack of people in the building at the moment, before recalling that this was a day off. Only the most important members of the company were here right now, and most were probably downstairs being questioned by Lisbon and Cho. No one could help him now.
No one, apparently, except for the janitor, Eliot Santiago.
As soon as Santiago saw Jane running towards him, Watts chasing after him with the knife, he defensively held up his mop. Jane ran past him, and as Watts did the same, Santiago hit him on the head with the mop, fiercely.
Watts dropped to the ground, unconscious. Jane stopped running and stared at Santiago. "...huh?"
Santiago put his mop away silently.
"He didn't try to kill you," Jane said. "You're the accomplice then, right?"
Santiago nodded mutely.
"Then… why did you save me?" Jane asked.
Santiago's eyes met his. "Because my plan with Watts wasn't to kill you or any of your CBI friends. Just Mason Webster. Watts was about to break the deal, so I had to do something to stop him. Could you call your CBI friends?"
Jane shook his head. "Nope. I accidentally left my phone with Lisbon." If I had it on me, I would have just called her and Cho sooner instead of risking my life with Watts.
Santiago handed his phone to Jane, and he gladly took it. Dialing in Lisbon's number, he waited for her to pick up. She soon did. "Hello? This is Agent Teresa Lisbon with the CBI, how can I help you?"
"This is Patrick Jane, consultant," Jane said, matching her formal tone. He heard her let out a hiss of annoyance.
"Jane! Where are you?"
"Uh… I don't know. But I'm with the unconscious culprit. And his accomplice, who knocked out the culprit to save me. I'll tell you the details later." Jane glanced at Santiago. "Where are we?" Santiago gave Jane their location and he was finally able to answer Lisbon's question. Hanging up, he said, "Well, now we wait."
Santiago sat down, a defeated look in his eyes. "Now we wait," he agreed.
