Amity growled in exasperation, ears firmly pinned down.
"Why do I have to go to a stupid summer camp?!" she cried.
"Because Mom said so, and that's all we know, honest!" Edric defended, putting up his hands to block the pillow thrown at him.
"It won't be that bad," Emira said, trying to comfort her younger sister, "I mean, you'll be out in the woods, you'll make new friends, you'll be under the stars."
"Yeah!" Edric chimed in, "You'll be free to goof off and do all the stupid stuff we used to do at summer camp!"
"Yeah, like what?" Amity spat.
Edric raised a finger, but paused.
"Okay, maybe not all the stuff we did. But hey, you might find a girlfriend!"
Amity threw another pillow at Edric, one he didn't defend this time.
Emira sighed, "Ams, c'mon, it won't be that bad. It's only three months."
"Three months?! How bad does Mom want us gone?!" Amity threw her hands up in frustration, the steam practically visible from the top of her head.
"I mean seriously," She continued, "A shared space with the both of you? For three months?! And dear Titan that isn't even considering the pranks! Or the snooping, o-o-or the trying to make me do all this stupid friendship exercise crap!"
Amity spun around and huffed, fangs bearing themselves, "Get a girlfriend, with you two around? Please, like you two wouldn't find a way to sabotage every chance I ever had to meet with someone like that!"
As Amity continued to rant, Emira and Edric exchanged a confused look, before Edric spoke up, "You do realize we won't be going, right?"
The words stopped Amity's train of thought in it's tracks.
"…You're not going?"
"Nope," said Emira.
"…So it'd just be me?"
"Yep," said Edric.
"…And I could do basically whatever I wanted?"
"Pretty much," the twins said in unison.
Amity blinked, and started shoving her siblings out of her bedroom, "C'mon, move it, I need to start packing!"
At The Noceda Household…
"Summer camp?" Luz asked, eyes drifting to meet her mother's.
"Yeah! I figured you could use the chance away from home," Camila said, smiling as comfortingly as she could.
"I mean, I have a car now," Luz said, "I could get time away from home without having to go out to the woods."
Camila took a seat at the dinner table, "But you've always liked going out in the woods, mija!"
"Yeah, when I was a kid."
Camila gave her a knowing, kind smile, "And a bit as you grew up, too."
Luz's rolled her eyes, the flush in her face taking the bite out of it.
"Luz, cariño, I know you may not have the…" Camila searched for words, "…Best experiences with things like this. But you're older now. You've learned a lot. You've grown. And I'm sure you'll be able to make plenty of new friends."
Luz sighed and put her head on her fist, "And what if I don't? What if I'm away for three months without anyone?"
Camila fell silent, opting to pull her daughter into an embrace, "I don't know for sure, Mija. But if that happens, and you really need to come home, I can pull you out of it."
Luz just hugged back in silence. Camila knew in reality there was no way to really sell this to Luz. And she knew how it was likely going to end. But she had one last ace up her sleeve.
"Well, baby, I was hoping I could keep it a surprise for when you get there, but."
Luz glanced up.
"This camp is being run by one of the teachers at Hexside."
Luz's eyes bugged out, "You…Mean that school for magic and witches?"
"Mhm," Camila said with a confident smile.
"The one from the other side of the state where you can actually learn how to perform magic? The school that gave us such great witches as Raine Whispers and Dell Clawthorne?!"
Camila nodded, chuckling, "Yes, that Hexside. They said nothing about Humans being able to go to the camp."
Luz felt her jaw go slack for a moment, and suddenly she gasped, her eyes practically sparkling. A smile curled onto her lips, and she launched herself into a bear hug around her mother.
"¡Eres la mejor, Mamá! ¡Gracias, gracias, gracias!"
Camilla coughed slightly, laughing as she caught her breath back, pulling her daughter in close, "Cualquier cosa para ti, querida."
The hug didn't last much longer, however, as Luz excitedly sprinted upstairs to her bedroom, immediately beginning to pack everything she would need. As each article of clothing fell into her suitcase, the girl felt on top of the world. This summer was going to be great!
The morning rays of the sun stretched across the sky, casting beautiful shadows along the ground and making the dewy grass glitter. The air was cool, the sky was clear, and there was a slight breeze. Camila's car trekked along the gravel path leading up to the campgrounds, Luz excitedly (and nervously) double checking everything that she had with her.
"Are you sure you're going to need that jacket?" Camila asked, giving her daughters arm a gentle poke, "or the beanie?"
Luz just looked at her mom, "Have you really ever seen me take these things off?"
Camila laughed, rubbing Luz's shoulder, "Fair point, mija."
Luz smiled, looking back down into the backpack she had with her. She wasn't too ashamed about bringing her Good Witch Azura books. Nothing wrong with reading them during the downtime. She also had a sketchbook, as well as a bunch of other various things that she was slightly more embarrassed to bring along. But her mother had insisted on the first aid kit at the very least. And the bear spray.
"Do we even have bears out here?"
"Sí, we absolutely do," Camila stated.
"But do we really?" Luz chuckled.
The two of them laughed and joked as they made their way closer to the campsite, eventually pulling in on one of the very few offshoots of the gravel road. The road itself stretched out into a roundabout surrounding a large firepit. Around the gravel path were several cabins, some with plenty of people mingling around them. A bit off in the distance, a fire watch tower could be seen, towering over even the trees, near the edge of a large cliff.
Just past the cliff, was a large lake, the sun shimmering across its crystal clear waters. And far off in the distance, large rolling mountains dominated the horizon. Camila brought the car to a stop a bit away from the cabins, and took a moment to take in the view with her daughter.
"Wow," Camila said, "Maybe I should take some time to stay here myself."
"No kidding."
They shared a beat of silence, before Camila held her daughter's shoulder. Her face filled with care, and she couldn't help but smile reassuringly at her daughter.
"Remember, no matter what happens, I can come pull you out."
Luz looked out at the other people already at camp, and smiled, looking back at her mother, "Thank you, Mamá. But, I think I'll be alright."
Camila reached over and gave Luz a hug, "Lo vas a hacer genial."
Eventually Luz stepped out of the car, grabbing a suitcase from the back and shrugging her pack onto her shoulder. Camila stepped out to shut the back, and turned to give her daughter one last hug.
"Stay safe for me, okay?"
"I will, Mom. I promise."
"And don't forget that you have bear spray!"
Luz rolled her eyes, but her smile took the bite out of it, "Yes, Mom."
"And they have some reception around here, so don't be afraid to use your phone!"
Luz laughed and gave Camila one last squeeze. Camila hopped back into her car, and Luz waved her off as the car made its way down the gravel path, back the way it came. Once the car was out of sight, Luz took a deep breath and turned around. An older looking lady with a mane of white hair approached her, dusting off her uniform casually.
"Hey, kid," she said, her voice nonchalant and easy, "You're the human that signed up here, right?"
"That would be me, unless there's anyone else."
The woman smiled, "Well, truth be told, I think you're actually the only human here."
Luz smiled, but felt it fall just a little.
"Don't worry kid. You're gonna fit in just fine. Just take it easy, and settle in, yeah? Oh! The names Eda Clawthorne, by the way," said Eda, holding out a hand, "I'm the headmaster here. But you can just call me Eda."
Luz's jaw dropped, "Eda…Clawthorne?"
Eda started to look a bit puzzled, "Uh…Yeah?"
Luz stood stiff for a moment, smile beaming brighter than the morning sun as she threw her arms around the older witch, "You have so much to teach me!"
"Woah, woah, what's going on here?" Eda said, trying to pry the teen off of her, "What do you mean teach you?!"
"Aren't you the daughter of Dell Clawthorne?"
Eda grew noticeably pensive, but nodded.
"So didn't he teach you some stuff?"
"Yeah, but what does that have to do with me teaching you?"
Luz cocked an eyebrow, "Aren't you a teacher at Hexside?"
"Well, not exactly," Eda said, hand rolling over itself a few times, "I'm not actually a teacher there per-se. I'm more of a...Well…"
Suddenly a tiny little furry creature popped its head out from the nest of white hair, a skull worn on its head and bright red, yellow, and black eyes staring directly at the human, "A janitor!"
Eda sighed and dragged her hand down her face, while Luz's attention got shifted to the fuzzy little whatever that had entered the conversation, "Yeah. A janitor. Buuut, they let me be headmaster here because I'm the only one truly familiar with the area."
"And because she keeps pestering her sister!" said the dog thing.
"Quiet, King!" Eda said, yelping slightly when Luz had reached up and grabbed a hold of King for herself.
"¡Ay, qué lindo!" Luz squealed, snatching King and pulling him into a tight hug around her chest.
King tried to free himself from her grasp, "What's happening?! What's happening?!"
"Eda, he's so cute!" Luz laughed, nuzzling her face against King's head. Eda snorted in laughter, doubling over a bit at the sight of King being ensnared and loved against his will. Once she had composed herself, she carefully took King out of Luz's hands, and he scampered into her hair for saftey.
"Listen, kid: It's the first day here. We haven't even gotten all the campers here yet!" Eda explained, motioning for Luz to follow, "So let's hold off on who I am and all this 'teach me' stuff until later, okay? You've got three months here, you're going to have a chance to learn a lot of new stuff before you know it!"
Luz conceded defeat, for now, but made sure to make a mental note of Eda for the next chance she got to talk to her one on one. They stopped outside of a much larger cabin. It had a second story, and it was painted a long faded olive green. The words "Camp Office" were painted onto a sign nailed to the front wall, the sign just as worn as the building itself. On the door was…an owl. Or at least the face of one.
"Hoot, hoot! Password, please!" it said in a cheery, high pitched voice.
Eda poked it in both of its eyes, "Not now, Hooty!"
"Ow! Geeze! You never wanna have any fun! Ow! Hoot!" Hooty complained, before opening himself up. Eda walked inside, and Luz followed close behind.
"Have a seat. What did you say your name was?"
Luz smiled, "Luz Noceda, Eda."
Eda smiled, and stepped around into the back room, "Give me a second, 'kay?"
Luz took a seat in one of the chairs, readjusting her hair up into her beanie. Eda took a seat behind her desk, and started flipping around a few large binders. She murmured the word "human" to herself as she searched, before finally finding what she wanted. The binder was turned and slid across the table, so Luz could see it for herself.
"I'm gonna be honest here, Luz. You got signed on kind of late, but thankfully we had some room for you. That being said," Eda traced a long, pale finger around a group of other cabins on what was a map of the campground, "We normally put campers in one of these cabins. They have three bunks and you'd have two roommates."
Luz nodded, listening intently.
"But, because you got put on kind of late, we only had one cabin left. And that would be this one," her finger slid across the map to a cabin on the far west side of the campground. It wasn't completely isolated, as it did have a couple of close neighbors to it's north, but it was still a bit out of the way.
"And that cabin has space for one other bed. So you and whoever you're staying with should try to get along. If the worst comes to worst, we can move you two around, but we try not to shake up groups too much, especially as the summer goes on."
Luz nodded again, "That makes plenty of sense to me."
Eda smiled at her, "Think you can handle a roomie?"
Luz held the back of her neck sheepishly, "Well, to be honest, I've never gotten along with people too well," she admitted, but a sudden surge of confidence made her break out into a smile, "But I think I can make some friends here! It's not like having to deal with humans."
Eda smiled, stifled a laugh, "Thank goodness for that," she said under her breath, earning a laugh from Luz. The headmaster stood up and stretched, reaching into her hair and setting King down on the desk.
"King, I'm gonna go show Luz here her new digs. You hold down the fort."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever," King mumbled, curling up on the desk for a nap.
The duo walked up the front steps to the cabin, Eda leading the way and pushing the old door open. Luz hauled her luggage up the steps, and breathed a sigh as she stood in the center of the cabin. She gave it a quick once over. The floor was adorned with a carpet that had been there for a long time. The cabin had windows on every wall, covered with bug netting, and thin curtains. A small tiki tower stood in one of the corners. A lantern hung from the center beam, and next to it a single light bulb. A bookshelf sat at the far end, loaded up with several books about the area, the campground, magic, nature, and anything else you can imagine. Atop the shelves sat a single clock.
The beds were separate, one at either side of the room. On their own they were fairly plain cots. A pillow at one end, a fairly soft fleece blanket over the mattress, and at the end a storage trunk. Underneath each bed was stashed a bundle of supplies, and a large hiking pack, undoubtedly with its own gear inside. And on top of each bed was a water bottle, a pamphlet, and a notebook with a spare pencil.
Luz couldn't help but grin ear to ear, looking around the room in wonder. Her mind already started to fill with the ideas of adventures and stories she'd come up with here, the late nights spent up with her roommate. The relief of coming back to sleep in the cozy building after a long, fulfilling day. Her earlier apprehensiveness about the camp was long melted away, and seeing the books of magic and witch history on the shelf had excitement bubbling out of her like soda pop.
"This is going to be a great summer," She said to herself, turning to smile at Eda and thank her.
"No problem, kiddo," Eda smiled, a genuine smile across her face. It had been a while since she saw this sort of attitude out of someone at camp.
The sound of gravel being crunched caused Eda's ear to perk, "I think that's another newcomer. Take your time and get situated, and feel free to explore for now! The pamphlet has all that you need to know in it."
Luz nodded, quickly starting to unpack.
"And feel free to come by the office if you need anything!"
"Will do, Owl Lady!" Luz chirped, flashing Eda a friendly wink. Eda was caught off guard by the nickname, but quickly smiled. She loved it. It was sticking for sure.
Luz took about a half hour to finish getting things set up. An extra blanket rested on her bed, and most of her belongings were carefully and neatly tucked away in the storage trunk at the foot of the bed. She bounced up from the mattress and stepped outside of the cabin. Unzipping her jacket, she took a deep breath in and savored the smell of pine and maple in the air, combined with the coolness from the lake. A smile tugged at her lips and she set off, free from the heavy load of all her stuff. It would be quite a few hours until the first assembly of camp members, and she was taking Eda's advice to explore.
By the time she was out strolling around, the dew had mostly vanished from the grass, the shimmer giving way to vivid green. She made her way down the path towards the central fire pit, catching the glimpse of birds in the air above her. She looked a bit down to the lake, seeing a few groups of people standing and chatting outside of their cabins, as well as a few people moving suitcases, luggage, and the like.
She also managed to catch a glimpse of the fancy car rolling into the campgrounds. It was a boat of a vehicle, and its chrome finishes dared anyone to look at it. Whoever owned it had a stupid amount of money, which was made even more evident as the driver stepped out. He wore a two piece suit, and he walked around the side of the car to open the passenger side door. Dark tinted glass moved aside, and a tall woman with a vibrant lions mane of purple hair stepped out. She looked around the camp somewhat disinterested, golden eyes careful and calculated.
The chauffer (or was he a butler?) wasted no time closing the door behind the girl and grabbing her luggage out of the back of the car. As Eda came up to greet the two of them, the butler stepped forwards. Some words were exchanged, and the Butler began to walk off, luggage in tow. The purple haired teen went off with Eda towards the office, her face growing ever more disgusted at Hooty's presence.
Luz, for the time being, shrugged it off, and continued onwards. She made her way over to a group of people huddled around the outside of a cabin. Luz decided it was best not to waste any time while she was here.
"Hi! I'm Luz, what's going on?" She chimed, her friendliest smile on display.
The figures stopped and turned awkwardly to stare at her. At the center of the group was a girl about Luz's height, sporting pink hair, pink skin, a letterman jacket with a large "B" embroidered on it, and a third eye placed perpendicular to the others. All three eyes squinted at Luz, and the girl smirked.
"Excuse me?" She said, her voice somewhat nasaly, like it was doing her best to turn her nose up even further at the sight of Luz, "What do you want, round ears?"
Luz's smile fell into a neutral expression. She did not need to speak with her any longer to know that she and her were not going to get along.
"Never mind," Luz said flatly.
The girl snickered as Luz turned to walk away, "Yeah, that's what I thought."
Luz tuned her out. And instead, her eye was caught by a pair of witches walking out of their cabin. One was very pale in complexion, and built well. She had some hint of muscle in her arms, and large round glasses framed her face to compliment the curls of hair either side of it. She wore a tan cardigan decorated with lighter diamonds, and under it a forest green dress, and dark yellow leggings.
She was deep in conversation with her friend, a boy with dark skin and a head of stylish, tight curls. He looked a couple of years younger than both his friend and Luz…And everyone else at camp, the more Luz studied him. he wore a two tone tee with a simple design on the front, and black skinny jeans with a pair of bright red sneakers. As Luz came a bit closer, she started to pick up some fragments of their conversation.
"I'm just saying," the girl mused, "I don't actually know if a human did sign up for this camp. I just don't think they could know about it."
"That is what you think," the boy said, puffing out his chest, "I for one have hope!"
Luz managed to intercept the two, a more genuine smile on her face than earlier, "Yeah, a human at a camp for witches? Seems pretty crazy if you ask me."
The two stopped, turning to look at Luz. The girl put a hand over her mouth and smiled, surprised. The boy's jaw was slack, and he gaped like a fish, his knees bending slightly and his posture folding. His friend gave him a concerned poke, but eventually shrugged.
"Guess I was wrong!" said the girl, before she offered Luz a hand, "I'm Willow."
"Luz!" Luz chirped, giving Willow's hand a firm shake. She could already tell she was going to like these two a lot better. She turned her attention to the younger boy, who was simply awestruck.
Willow took a glance at him and laughed, "And that is Augustus. He's kind of a human fanatic."
Luz went to shake Augustus's hand, with a cheerful, "Nice to meet you, Gus!"
Gus gasped, carefully shaking Luz's hand, "Human nickname! Human handshake!" He gawked as their hands made contact, and held the wrist with his free hand as he got it back, "I don't know if I'll ever wash you again."
Willow gave him a light punch in the shoulder, "You wash that hand or so help me Titan."
"Alright, alright, geez!"
Luz laughed, "So, mind if I hang around with you guys for a bit?"
"Not at all!" Willow said, starting to resume the walk with Luz now on her opposite side. The three made their way out from the cabin and north, in the direction of the lake.
"We were just talking about the likelihood of an actual Human being here at this camp," Gus explained after he had managed to compose himself a bit.
"I wasn't quite sure I could believe it, but I'm more than happy to have been proven wrong," Willow added.
"Well, I gotta say when the idea first was brought up I wasn't too excited about it," Luz rubbed the back of her neck sheepishly, "But once I heard it was hosted by Hexside I was more than happy to give it a shot."
"And do you think that shot has been worth it so far?" Gus asked.
Luz beamed and nodded, "I'm getting along with the two of you. That's more in my first day here than I ever accomplished at human summer camps."
Willow gave her a comforting smile, "Well, we're glad you found us. Right Gus?"
"Absolutely!" Gus said, doing his best to jump up and move the hair at the back of Luz's head out of the way. Luz instinctively turned and swatted the hand away.
"What are you trying to do?" she asked.
"I'm trying to see where your gills are!" Gus said, as if it explained everything.
Luz snorted, "You guys have a hell of a lot to learn."
"…So does that mean you don't have gills?"
Willow gave him another gentle shoulder punch.
The trio made their way out to the lake, deciding to debunk any human misconceptions they had while taking in the view. And maybe taking a dip if Luz felt ballsy enough. As they approached the lake's beach, however, they caught sight of the group Luz had ran into earlier. Luz immediately grimmaced, and Willow groaned.
"Of course Boscha would be here," Willow said.
"That's her name?" Luz asked, "I didn't even get to ask that."
"I'm not too surprised," Gus said, "Boscha is kind of…"
"A raging bitch," Willow finished, prompting a snort from Luz.
"Really? I mean best she had to call me was 'Round ears'. She could try a little harder."
The group snickered, resuming their walk when Boscha looked over. She snapped at the group, and Luz made a mental note that Boscha must be capable of sensing fun so she can destroy it. She stopped and turned, face blank and fists in her pockets.
"¿Que pasa?" Luz called out.
Boscha smirked, "Oh, look, the loser found the loser brigade!"
While her clique of girls snickered, Luz simply yawned, "You can at least try to be creative you know."
"Oh, shut up, human," Boscha sneered, stepping forwards a bit, "You're not even supposed to be here!"
"I didn't see any rules 'bout it." Luz said simply.
Boscha growled, taking another step forward, now standing well in front of her clique. She stopped, however, when the teen from before stepped out. She stared at Luz, golden eyes piercing into her with a cold glare. her purple hair moved wildly in the breeze, and she placed a hand on her hip.
The girl wore high heeled boots, giving her a couple of extra inches she really didn't need. A pink shirt hugged her frame, and flowed out past her hips. Ripped black skinny jeans ran down her legs. And, to top it all off, a spiked bracelet was snug around her right wrist, and a choker with a crescent moon was tight around her neck. Everything about her attitude held an innate "I am better than you" feel.
"You know, Boscha, for once you have a point," She said quietly.
Willow had long ago turned a blind eye to the girl challenging the group, her and Gus opting instead to look out at the water.
Luz had different plans.
The girl scoffed and started walking over, suddenly standing just a few feet away from the taller punk rock mess. She leaned to one side, shifting her weight from foot to foot, looking the girl up and down, "And who are you exactly?"
The other girl raised an eyebrow, "Seriously?"
"What? The human doesn't know a few witches, sue me."
"Amity Blight," the other teen said, venom mixing into her words.
"Well, Blightie, I'm Luz Noceda," Luz said, throwing on an overly confident smirk and sticking out a hand, "Nice to meet you."
Amity swatted her hand away with a scoff, her words filled with disgust, "Put that away. And don't ever call me that again."
"Woah, what's your problem?" Luz asked, putting the hand back into her jacket pocket.
"My problem is that someone like you seems to think they belong here, Noceda."
Luz finally started to frown, "What makes you think I don't?"
Amity reached out and smirked, pinching the cusp of one of Luz's ears between a finger and her nail, eliciting a hiss from the other teen and a small fit of giggles from the group behind her. Luz's hand swatted Amity's away. She went to say something, but noticed how Amity's gaze had drifted past her, over in the direction of Willow. Luz turned about face, and Amity called out.
"Oh hey, Willow!" Amity called out, "You're so unnoticeable that I didn't see you!"
Willow did her best to pretend like she couldn't hear her, but Luz was already scowling.
"I didn't realize they were letting half-witches here too," Amity said in a condescending tone, mumbling, "Though I guess the bar was already set pretty low."
As the taller girl's gaze came back to Luz, she was met with the human seething in place.
"Listen, Blight. Rag on me all you want, but you don't have to be a dick to my friends!"
Amity put a hand over her mouth as she stifled a laugh, "You? Friends with them? They're more desperate than I-"
The teen was cut off by a shove from Luz, sending her stumbling backwards. But Amity was quick to recover, immediately rushing forwards again and sweeping Luz's legs as she tried to jump back. The human fell onto her ass, scrambling away to get back up on her feet. But Amity reached down and tugged her up by the collar of her shirt, reeling a fist back.
The sound of a whistle pierced the air and made them both jolt. They looked over to the source, and saw Eda rushing over.
"Amity Blight, what in Titan's name are you doing?!"
Amity immediately began to sputter, "W-Wait, wait hold on a second, it's not what you think!"
"Not what I think? So what is this exactly?!"
Amity let Luz go, "I-It's, it's-"
"It was a fight." Luz interrupted. Eda and Amity turned to look at her, surprised.
"So Amity was about to hurt you?" Eda asked, a disappointed look growing on her face as she looked over at Amity again, "I knew the Blight's could be a prideful bunch, but this is ridiculous!"
"But, Miss Clawthorne, I didn't even start anything!"
"Amity, really?" Eda groaned, rubbing her temple, "Come on. Make it quick and maybe we don't need to report this to your parents."
Amity quickly began sputtering again, her face growing hot, when Luz said "She's telling the truth."
By this point, everyone around was surprised, all eyes fixed on Luz. She stepped up, standing side by side with Amity.
"I started it. She's telling the truth. She isn't entirely to blame for it."
Eda gave her an inquisitive eyebrow raise. Luz quickly threw her arm around Amity's shoulders, the taller girl stiffening instantly. If only she knew how intensely this bothered Luz as well. With her best smirk and all the human charm she could muster, Luz kept talking, much to the dismay of Amity.
"But can you really be mad at a little friendly scuffle?" Luz chuckled, squeezing Amity into her for a moment.
Amity whispered at her, "What the hell are you doing?"
"Shh!"
Eda sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. Eventually she looked around, telling the rest of everyone involved to get back to whatever it was they were doing. She motioned for Luz and Amity to follow her, mumbling something about Blight's siblings as they walked back to the main office building. Needless to say, they got scolded for what they did. Eda gave them the whole spiel about how "camp is based off respect and friendship" and "you two need to get along if you wanna make things easy". She also made sure to emphasize how she normally didn't even have to give this speech until evening of the first day.
Eventually, though, Eda did let the two walk out of the office, telling them to go and do whatever and that the starting ceremonies and bonfire started at seven. By the time they left the building, it was already 5 pm. The two waited until they were out of earshot of Hooty, before Luz spoke up.
"If you ever want to finish that fight," she said, looking over her shoulder past her jacket, "Just find me. We'll find a better place."
"No thanks," Amity scoffed, brushing her hair out of her face.
"Aww, scared you're gonna lose already?" Luz smirked, "I'm touched, really."
Amity immediately began to walk ahead of the human, "On second thought, maybe a quick go would be worth it, if it got you to shut up."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever, Blight. You owe me for helping you out," Luz said, eventually walking side by side with Amity. The witch kept her ears pressed against her head, and kept her arms folded, avoiding any contact with Luz at all costs.
"Whatever. I just don't need to deal with you this summer," she spat, "I've got time away from my parents and my siblings, I don't need anyone sullying that. So just stay out of my way, got it?"
Luz gave a noise of dismissing affirmation, the two of them opting to walk in silence for a moment. It took them a little long to notice, however, that they were both headed in the same direction. Luz picked up the pace, putting herself slightly ahead of Amity.
"Where are you going?" Amity hissed.
"My cabin. Where are you going?"
"To my cabin," Amity said.
Luz rolled her eyes and turned to face forwards again, finally taking her hands out of her pockets. A hand grabbed the old handle to the door of her cabin, and pulled it open. She stopped at the first step, and felt her heart plummet.
The once empty half of the room, save for the bed, had a deep purple satin blanket on it. A frilled pillow had replaced the one that was originally there, the older pillow tossed across haphazardly to Luz's side of the room. The blanket and pillow were free of creases and wrinkles, and what could honestly be considered an entire wardrobe of clothing was packed neatly into the storage chest, as well as in another small container set by one of the bed's legs. Underneath the bed was a familiar suitcase, and draped over the foot of the bed was a letterman jacket, a large "A" embroidered on the chest, and the words "BLIGHT" across the shoulders.
Luz took a step forwards into the room, only to look behind her to see Amity, in total shock.
Luz had found out who her roommate was going to be.
