Chapter Ten – Surrender
Rouge wasn't underestimating that Shadow would wake up angry. It took four people, including Sonic, Vector and Knuckles to carry him outside, and to the spot the Blue Blur had in mind. It was at the foot of a large ancient tree, which was always warm and had comforting firs and soft grasses at his base. It was one of his favourite outdoor sleeping spots. Soon, Shadow was settled and Sonic stayed, the Vampires were soon left alone. Everyone retreated back to the house, of which Tails then locked down the house. He had his own version of chaos-shielding, but it didn't complete block teleporting, like chaos-reenforcement does, it just diverted it outside, which was more effective.
He hadn't used it before because one, he didn't want to lock Sonic out, and two, everyone was certain that as a Mindless Monster, Shadow couldn't use his Chaos abilities. Now that he was back, teleporting was back on the menu. Everyone was still torn about Shadow. He'd just starting gaining their trust again, just before he was turned, and now everyone was extremely frightened, of the unknown that lay ahead of them. Sonic still trusted Shadow, always did, that never changed, but since becoming a Mindless Monster, no one knew exactly how he'd react. Rouge only had a hunch. Even she didn't know for certain. But Sonic heaved. Everyone had been incredibly accommodating to him under the circumstances and he knew how terrified they all were.
Shadow's temper was going to explode, and Sonic had to find a way of breaking it and fast, to make him safe. He had an idea. It would work but he wasn't going to like it, and it would immediately throw of all the mighty Ultimate Lifeform's attention on him. He heaved. Better him then his friends, assuming he survived. Shadow would have every right, to kill him, to tear his throat out. Finally everything was setup and everyone was safe. All they had to do now was wait.
Shadow began to finally stir from the deep darkness. He felt warm and comfortable, purring deeply, not wanting to move at all. He sniffed, and caught the sweet smell of freshly cut grass on the morning breeze. He frowned. He was outside? He shrugged. No matter, he slept outdoors before, not that he hardly slept. Suddenly, his eyes snapped opened, and he heavily growled, bolting upright. He didn't. He only ever slept after being... He temper roared in pure anger. Mind-controlled. He immediately searched his memories and sure enough, there it was. An enormous gap, where there was absolutely nothing. The last thing he remembered was entering that train facility after feasting, and then next was, well, waking up here. He had no recollection of the resurrection at all.
He scrambled up his feet, looking around. He immediately spotted something familiar close by. Tails' House. He hissed, gritting his teeth, baring his fangs. What had the Fox got to do with it? He smirked. Regardless, he get an answer, even if he'd have to torture him for it. He was about to make a beeline for the house, when something caught his attention, than immediately blow his brain.
A scent. It utterly smashed everything, breaking it all. His temper, his frustration, his confusion, as he turned behind him, to a fallen log close by. He sniffed again. He frowned. No, it wasn't his imagination, and he slowly walked towards the log. He could smell, himself, just the other side of it, in a form his just could quite believe. The colour drained from him, visibly shaking, as he poked his nose over the log and looked down. There was a small, wicker basket, containing something that had been lovingly cleaned and respectfully wrapped in white blankets. Shadow climbed over the logs and put his nose right in. Suddenly his instincts got the better of him. His jaw dropped in horror, desperately looking around.
A baby?
What was it doing here alone? Where was the mother? He looked back at it and sniffing again, he finally realised the truth. His scent, his D.N.A on the child. He was the father. Shadow gulped. He never believed in his entire existence that he'd ever sire offspring. But as the Ultimate Lifeform, he couldn't. Gerald had created him sterile. But as a Vampire, everything had changed and now he was just downright confused. When did this happen and with who? Shadow had no idea as he picked up the basket and carefully unwrapped the infant.
There it was, the baby male Black Hedgehog, looking identical to himself, sleeping soundly. He gulped, nervously putting his nose into it, to nuzzle it and suddenly his instincts exploded. The baby was as cold as ice. Shadow's eyes filled his tears, as he picked up the baby from the basket, and licked it all over, desperately listening out for a heartbeat. Nothing. It was dead.
He roared as his grief, which turned to pure anger. Who did this? The tears still streaming as he inspected the infant for any clues as to the perpetrator. Suddenly, he found the bite marks on the back of the neck and sniffed them, recognised the scent.
He frowned, unable to believe as he felt a presence behind him, as Shadow whirled, the baby still in his arms, to face his killer. He growled.
"You." He snarled, but Sonic with his ears down, threw up his hands and backed away. He gulped.
"Shadow, I didn't have a choice. It was killing Rouge." He stammered. Shadow stared, going white. He looked down at the baby. What? Rouge? What had the Bat got to do with it? The baby was pure Hedgehog. Sonic heaved. "Shadow, G.U.N. at that training facility didn't mind-control you, they destroyed your mind. Killing it, leaving behind nothing more then a Mindless Monster, your Vampire instincts completely taking over. That's why you can't remember anything. You physically weren't there." He sniffed, looking at the baby. "I don't know what happened between you and Rouge. Whether you forced her, or she let you out of fright, but you mated, and because a Mindless Monster biology is different, you turned her into a Carrier, and the child would have just eaten it's way out, itself nothing more then a mindless killer." He cried. "I had to choose between her or the kid. I'm sorry." He heaved, sitting on the log next to Shadow.
The Ultimate Lifeform gulped, realising the true horrors of what had happened. He sniffed the baby, and saw nothing but bloodthirsty instincts. There was no mind. Sonic had obviously killed it before the immortality had kicked it. But if he hadn't the child would have just grown extremely rapid, just like he did, and completely uncontrollable, it would have just slaughtered everything. He sighed, looking at the Blue Blur. He understood why he did it. Sacrificing one to save the many, but he didn't forgive him for it. Suddenly, his mind turned to Rouge, as he was beginning the smell her scent on the baby. Sonic had been speaking the truth. He closed his eyes his pure guilt. He did this to her? He had no memory of any of it. Rouge was one of the few people he truly cared about and the mere thought of forcing himself onto her, utterly horrified him. He gulped, turning to Sonic.
"Rouge?" He stammered. But Sonic heaved, desperately trying to calm him. He nodded.
"She's alright." He smiled, but then he sighed. "She forgives you, because it wasn't you." He added. Shadow growled, feeling more within himself that what he was being told was the truth. Why his mind had been feeling so disembodied from the rest of him, and why this felt so different to a standard mind-control. Plus he knew Sonic, and the Blue Blur had no reason to lie to him. In fact, he knew Sonic respected him enough to always speak the truth to him, no matter how hard. He just exploded in further tears of pure guilt and grief as he cuddled his dead baby. He cried.
"The Mindless Monster did this." He heaved. Sonic nodded, still terrified that Shadow could still attack him at any moment. Suddenly, he roared in anger, remembering back the the train facility. "G.U.N will pay for this." He growled. But Sonic panicked, gulping hard.
"But they already have." He stammered. Shadow immediately stopped, his temper breaking as he stared at the Blue Blur. He gasped.
"What?" He stammered. Sonic backed away again frightened. He whimpered.
"You tracked G.U.N. down and found them using an empty building, for their second headquarters, in the main military base of the Mobian Authorities, just outside of the Empire City. It's where most of the organisation and administration work is done for the government." He stuttered. But Shadow just smirked.
"Good riddance." He hissed, but Sonic rounded on the Ultimate Lifeform, desperate not to get too close. He gulped.
"No, Shadow. You didn't just slaughter G.U.N. in that base, you slaughtered everyone. You left four and a half thousand people dead." He stammered, himself now so frightened, and he just couldn't bare staying any longer. Shadow could see this as he stared. His own blood brother this scared of him, meant it had to be true. Suddenly, his own fear kicked in, and now he too was desperate to leave, and suddenly he vanished, in a flash of bright white light, taking the baby with him.
Sonic must have ran for it, as he wasn't followed as he landed on the Ark. He'd let him go. But Shadow grabbed his ears, as the ran for the computer console and turned off the alarms. He heaved, as he then looked to the vault and saw the door open, the lock kicked in, it still dripping with blood. He then finally worked out what happened. That Sonic had used the seven Chaos Emeralds to bring him back. Shadow was impressed, the effort needed to take him out, must have been huge but then his mind turned to that base, as he began searching the Ark, for news articles. There was a warrant out for his arrest. Shadow The Hedgehog. The tears fell again. He gulped. All those people. Shadow was a killer, yes, but it was always for a reason. Be it for money, orders or vengeance. But the evidence of what he was seeing from the base, and at the training facility, across all the news channels, showed mindless killing as it's absolute worse. Then he saw it. The photo they'd release captured from the base. The Mindless Monster, hunched over, fangs and clawed bared, venom dripping, eyes gone, mind dead.
Shadow screamed, jumping out of his chair, the baby still in his arms. That was him? He remembered nothing, and these people, whom hadn't done anything wrong, including his own child, had all paid with their lives. He just couldn't bare it. This was mindless killing on a scale he just couldn't cope with. Even he had standards, and as he cuddled his baby, he knew what he was going to do. He looked down at it. Licked it all over again, and grabbing a nearby blanket and slowly walked through the Ark to the incinerator, in tears the whole way.
He then wrapped up the child, and with a fond farewell, he throw the baby in. It immediately burned to ashes, and Shadow knew his remains would be thrown out into space, free, where he should have been. Not born to a Mindless Monster who should have known better. Shadow sighed, now he did. He completely and utterly blamed himself. Time to give the people of the planet below what they want.
It took several days before Sonic finally have the confidence to return home. Shadow was gone, as expected. He saw him teleport away, and when he was let into Tails' House again, he was greeted with enormous hugs. His plan had succeeded. Distracting Shadow with the baby had worked, but it had been extremely dangerous. He could have easily have killed him over it, but Sonic was impressed. He'd taken it rather well, leaving him to think that maybe he'd underestimated him. He heaved. They all knew where he'd gone. The Ark, but none dared follow. Up there, he was safe, unless fired the Eclipse Cannon at them. They all shuddered, but shook their heads. He'd promised Maria, no way he'd do that, no matter bad he felt. Sonic was so guilty. He cried his heart out.
"I created that monster." He wailed, but Rouge rounded on him. She growled.
"No, you didn't. G.U.N. did. You freed him. Shadow told me the story himself, and he let you. If you hadn't, he'd be under the complete control of G.U.N. right now. All of us would probably be dead, and the corruption would be everywhere. Now it's all gone." She heaved. But Sonic growled.
"Yeah, because he murdered everyone involved." He hissed, but Vector shrugged.
"Well, it's one way to do it." He sniggered, of which he immediately got rounded upon. He growled, defensively. "Look, I don't know Shadow that well, but I'd suspect he'd take death over a lifetime under someone else's control, any day. Those guys were corrupting kids. Better to die. If I was ever in position, I'd do it." He added, sniffing hard. They all looked at each other and all agreed, so would they too. But at least it was all over. The corruption was indeed no more. Everyone was dead, and Vector had destroyed the machine getting the Chaos Emeralds out. In fact, had really taken his anger out on it. It wouldn't be repaired anymore. Tails smiled, reassuringly Sonic. He smiled.
"He'll come back when he's ready." He sighed, but suddenly, he was immediately cut across by Espio who stormed into the house, which a odd look on his face. He rounded on the Fox. He panted.
"No, he's not. Have you seen the news?" He gulped. The Fox immediately grabbed the remote and threw on the television. They all stared in silence. The Mouse newsreader was sat at a desk looking directly at the camera, in a full suit, looking extremely stern, his voice somewhat emotionless.
"A worldwide manhunt ends today, as Shadow The Hedgehog had been located and arrested. He was cornered just south of Westropolis, and but willingly gave himself in. He is wanted in connection with the deaths of over four thousands people and the now in custody, the Mobian Authorities have declared the world safe from his ternary again."
They all stared, but Sonic just exploded. He hissed, his fangs exploding from his jaws, causing everyone to back away.
"Arrested? Willingly? Oh, Shads, what are you doing? You know there isn't a prison or cell in the whole of Mobius that can hold you now. I doubt stasis would even work." He spat. But Rouge heaved, trying to grab the Blue Blur and calm him.
"Please, be still. This was his choice. Seems like the guilt got the better of him." She sighed, but Knuckles just growled.
"Yeah well, no amount of guilt will get him forgiven for those crimes. Good riddance." He hissed. But Sonic immediately threw himself off of Rouge and suddenly went for the Echidna, forcing Knuckles to back away right against the wall, desperate to get away from the Vampire's highly-potent venom, now dripping from his fangs. Sonic roared.
"That's my blood brother." He cried, his stubbornness as always downright refusing to give up. Rouge was about the charge at him, the only of them who could get cut by Tails got there first. He panicked.
"Sonic, stop." He begged. "Please stop." He pleaded. The Blue Blur did indeed stop, millimetres from tearing Knuckles' throat out, the Echidna panting hard. Tails sighed. "The newsreader said that Shadow The 'Hedgehog' had been arrested but you and I both know, he's not a Hedgehog anymore." He sniggered. He looked at Sonic, in full Vampire mode, and saw the full irony of it. He was known as Sonic The Hedgehog and yet, he wasn't a Hedgehog either. Rouge smirked.
"A case of mistaken identity, maybe." She grinned. Sonic immediately let go of Knuckles and walked towards her, him moving between her and the Fox. Suddenly, Tails smiled.
"Go get him." He beamed, and without a single word, Sonic was out the door and away, as fast as his feet could carry him.
Shadow never said a word. He was arrested, brutally beaten, interrogated multiple times, and even given truth serum, and still the Ultimate Lifeform breathed nothing. The police were desperately wanting to know what the poison was, he used to kill everyone. It was extremely potent. The most they had ever seen. Shadow just smirked. They were so wrong, on so many levels, that he found it extremely hard to believe. But it came to a very simple thing. Vampires had completely fallen out of existence. Absolutely no one believed in them, and if Shadow had told the truth, he'd be just laughed at. The handful at G.U.N. who did believe, were exactly that, a handful. No one else in the entire planet did, hence Sonic's deception had lasted so long. Who was going to believe the Hero of Mobius as a bloodthirsty killer? No one, despite it being the truth.
To everyone, their existence were nothing then fantasy horror stories, myths of a forgotten time. In the end, after several weeks, they just gave up. But the Chief Inspector of the police, the Bear in charge, just couldn't understand something. The photograph from the base of Shadow, the monster, just didn't match to the calm, cool, numb and extremely reserved person they had in custody. Not a mindless killer. But whomever they had in their cells, was getting sicker by the day. The Bear frowned, watching him through the bars. According to Shadow's own D.N.A. profile on their archives, he didn't need to eat, sleep and never got ill. But the person in the cell ahead of him, looked like Shadow, he even smelt like him, but as he watched the Black Hedgehog grab his stomach, and curl up on the bed, screaming on the bed, he was becoming less convinced. In the end, even the rest of the police force agreed too.
The Bear got worried. Having Shadow die on him, wasn't an option. But he was immortal, so that didn't make sense. A doctor was called, and he examined Shadow, but the Ultimate Lifeform was desperate to get away from him, but he did managed to get a blood sample from the mighty Black Hedgehog. He ran it for blood sugar. All of Shadow's symptoms were all indicating one thing, of which the doctor himself just couldn't believe. He'd examined Shadow before, many years ago, and this just wasn't the same Hedgehog. The Chief of police met up with him. The Bear frowned.
"What we got?" He asked, deeply worried. Doctor too frowned, until the test results came up, causing his jaw to drop. He gulped.
"Sir. His blood sugar levels are through the floor. He desperately needs food." He gasped, pointing back at the cell. The Bear stared.
"Food? Shadow?" He stammered, absolutely gobsmacked. Suddenly, he frowned at the sample in the doctor's hand. "Hey." He asked. "Can you run that for D.N.A. and compare it to what we have on file?" He wondered, but the doctor nodded but frowned, looking back through the cell.
"You don't believe that's him, do you?" He gulped. The Chief of police shook his head.
"No." He heaved. But the doctor heaved.
"Then who is he?" He asked. But the Bear just shrugged.
"I have no idea." He admitted, as the doctor disappeared to the laboratory. The Bear didn't think imposter. Someone Shadow had paid to take the fall for him. No, that was too obvious, but it wasn't the Ultimate Lifeform's style. He was a Hedgehog of honour, despite being a killer, and personally saw to any debt he owned, including jail time. Him giving himself up wasn't out of character, but the lack of anything else, was. He hadn't spoken, lost his temper, tried to escape, nothing. All classic Shadow The Hedgehog traits, the police should have seen. Now the Chief was beginning to believe that all the rumours that the mighty Black Hedgehog could be controlled against his will might be true and that his rampage on the military base wasn't his choice. From the intense grief and guilt, the Bear constantly saw in his eyes, he suspected not. But the question was who and did they survive the rampage?
Again, the Bear thought no. Whomever was controlling Shadow had obviously lost that control and it had lead to the slaughter. If that was true, then what? Technically, Shadow wasn't a creature born, he had no rights. He was property of G.U.N. and now there was none of them were left. The Mobian Authorities was heavily interested in him, but the Bear didn't believe sending him there was a good idea. To be forced into servitude, potentially leading to the same disaster all over again. The D.N.A. results would decide, as all of a sudden, the Bear caught a glimpse of someone outside. A royal Blue streak, of which the Bear immediately chased after. It might give him some answers. He heaved.
If Sonic was here, then it was definitely Shadow in that jail cell, and yet it wasn't. What was going on? The Chief waved down the Blue Blur.
"Sonic, stop." He bellowed. Sonic frowning, turned around and ran over to the Bear. He smiled.
"Hi." He giggled. The Bear was panting, staring at the Blue Blur as though something was different but it wasn't. He heaved.
"Hello. Are you looking for Shadow?" He asked, deeply frowning. Sonic practically jumped for joy. He squealed.
"Yes, I've been looking for him everywhere. For weeks now. I've tried every prison, police station, backwater jail, and holding cell I could think of. Nothing." He heaved. "I hope he's alright." He added, looking worried. But the Bear frowned.
"That's a very odd thing to say about someone whose just murdered thousands." He spat, but Sonic growled.
"It wasn't him." He spat. "G.U.N. were controlling him and they lost that control and he slaughtered everyone." He added, of which the Bear immediately looked up. His suspicions were true, after all. He heaved.
"So he was being controlled." He stammered, then he realised something. "Hey, how do you know all this? How come your not dead along with everyone else?" He wondered. But Sonic sighed, folding his armed.
"You don't want to know." He heaved, but then he suddenly, began to hiss, rather forcibly at the Bear. "I'm sorry. You are?" He spat. But the Bear puffed himself up importantly.
"Inspector Harper, Chief of Police." He growled, throwing is I.D. badge at the Blue Blur. "Shadow is here." He hissed, indicating the non-assuming plain white building behind him, on the very edge of Westropolis. Sonic gulped, handing back the I.D. badge, his ears back.
"Sorry, sir." He whimpered. He felt very stupid for missing this place. He must have ran past it several times, not giving the unassuming building a second thought. Shadow much have sensed him but gave no impression he was there. Even now, Sonic was seriously struggling to smell Shadow's scent from within the building. He looked through the open door, desperate to see anything. He heaved. "He must be starving." He hissed under his breath, now looking rather worried. The Bear frowned. How did the Blue Blur know about that? But Sonic knew that Shadow wouldn't just teleported out to feed and returned. There usual hunting grounds had been bare. No sign of Shadow at all, and no news of weird bite marks anywhere. So he hadn't eaten, in weeks.
Sonic cried. He must be fighting every instinct in his body not the kill everyone in that building. He must have been desperate for food. But as a Vampire, he knew what it felt like not to eat. The horrendous suffering, the excruciating pain. He'd done it himself, not wanting to kill as a child. But he didn't have a choice, and now, neither did Shadow. He was doing this to himself because he felt he deserved it, but even Sonic had to admit, enough was enough. Time to feed his brother. But how was he going to get blood in? He had no idea, not without getting caught, which would one, reveal the truth or two, make the whole situation so much worse as it would be read entirely the wrong way.
So Sonic decided neither. He had to get Shadow out.
Somehow.
But he had no idea how. But not without having the whole of the entire planet coming after them, if he just broke him out. He didn't fancy spending the rest of his days on the run, and suspected neither would Shadow. There had to be another way. Suddenly, the answer presented itself, as the doctor arrived at the door, looking for the Chief, with the D.N.A. test results. Sonic immediately recognised the paperwork, having had those tests done as a child before he'd fully turned into a Vampire, his D.N.A. changing as a result and back when he was still reading as Hedgehog. He smirked. Time for some seriously sweet talking, as he suspected what the police had done here. If he played his cards right here, he could potentially walk out of here, with the Ultimate Lifeform scot free. He giggled.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I think we're have a misunderstanding here. The guy in your cells, it's not Shadow." He beamed. The doctor looked up.
"He's not." He stammered. But Sonic shook his head, giggling.
"No, he isn't. Hard to believe, isn't it but hear me out. We found him wondering aimlessly near Tails' House, just after me and the real Shadow had had a huge incident with the seven Chaos Emeralds. I was trying to catch him after he'd murdered all those people. Anyway, he'd just vanished into thin air and I was left alone. Absolutely no idea where. I searched everywhere. All his usual haunts and nothing. Then all of sudden, this guy shows up. Looking identical to the Ultimate Lifeform but with no memories of anything. He didn't even know me. Anyway, Tails D.N.A. tested him." He explained, pointing to the doctor's paperwork. "And we got the same results as you. No match. He's not Shadow. Not even close on the D.N.A. Anyway, he was scared, so I befriended him. He didn't really have a name, so he did take to 'Shads'." He sniggered. "Like hell I'd call my old rival that." He spat. "But then if he is 'Shadow The Hedgehog', then I have no idea what happened to him, but there is one thing I do know. He didn't kill those people. He's too warm and nice for that." He smiled, choosing his words very carefully. "When he saw the warrant for Shadow's arrest all over the news, he must have believed that was him, and.." He shrugged, only to be cut across by the Chief of Police. The Bear heaved.
"And he therefore handed himself in." He sighed. "Well, that explains a lot. Why we didn't get anything out of him. No response, nothing. Not very Ultimate Lifeform like at all. He had genuinely no idea what he were talking about." He growled. But the doctor rounded on the Bear. He gulped.
"Sir, with the D.N.A. proving negative against the Ultimate Lifeform, do we still have any legal right to keep him?" He stammered. But the Chief growled, but Sonic cut across him. He hissed in anger.
"And I bet you haven't been feeding him either. Poor thing. Confused and having no idea what's going on, and not even his own captors are providing food. He must be so scared." He hissed. "I always thought the police were better then that." He growled, of which the Chief goes absolutely white, the Bear stammering like mad.
"We are." He defended, and suddenly, he grabbed the Blue Blur by the shoulders. "Look." He heaved. "Please, don't let this get out. If word gets out that we don't feed out inmates, we'll all loose our jobs, possibly worse." He gulped. The doctor nodding intensely. The Bear heaved. "We have a reputation to uphold. Anyway, we can no long legally keep this 'Shads' as you call him, because his D.N.A. doesn't match the suspect, so if you'll sign the paperwork, I'll be happy to release him to your care." He sighed. "Look after him, please. He looks as though he's been through the ringer, and please, for Mobius sake, find him some food, with our apologies." He begged as he invited Sonic inside.
Half an hour later, and with all the paperwork signed, the Blue Blur was stood back outside again, with a certain blood brother stood next to him, in absolute stunned amazement. Immediately, Sonic threw his arms around him. Shadow was so relieved to be out of that jail cell, that he just hugged him back. He heaved.
"Nicely done, by the way." He stammered, his voice light and warm. "I overheard everything." He smiled. But Sonic just beamed.
"I didn't lie to them." He sniggered. Shadow's eyes widened. No, he hadn't. There were very slight bends in the truth, and Sonic had told them everything short of them being actual Vampires. The wondering aimlessly outside Tails' House. True. That's were he woke up. The huge incident with the seven Chaos Emeralds, again true, and him vanishing. He'd just fallen asleep. The no memories of anything, true, and not knowing Sonic. Properly not, straight after returning from the either. Tails hadn't D.N.A. tested him, there was no need, they already knew it was different. The befriending was also true too. Sonic's explanation of what happened to his baby was what persuaded him to give himself up the first place. It was a clever and subtle manipulation of the real truth to give the impression that something entirely different had happened. Shadow smirked.
"I'm seriously impressed. I didn't believe you was capable of such manipulations." He hissed, but Sonic just giggled.
"I did learn from the best." He grinned. Shadow smirk broadened but then he noticed over the Blue Blur's shoulder. He hissed.
"We are being watched, by the way." He leered, as he saw eyes through the windows of the police station looking at them intently. Suddenly, Shadow buckled, as the intense hunger was back. He roared in pain. Sonic grabbed him and steadied him. He smiled.
"Dinner?" He asked. Shadow drooled.
"Yes, please." He growled, and still holding on, Sonic put out a hand behind his back as though to grab the 'non-existent' Chaos Emerald for a Chaos Control. But as Vampires, they didn't need one to teleport but the watching police didn't know that, as Shadow quickly caught on. He pretended to look bewildered, him perfectly activated his own teleport at the same time as Sonic's to give the impression, that the Blue Blur had just used a Chaos Emerald, to Chaos Control them out of there. It worked. They weren't followed.
Finally, they landed in their hunting grounds, in Capital City, as Shadow immediately disappeared into the shadows of the city.
