[ONE-SHOT]
...
Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
Makoto Kino was absolutely stunning.
She was a tall girl with fair skin and a rather slim complexion, though a closer examination would reveal a slight bit of muscle. She had these big emerald eyes and long wavy reddish-brown hair that she usually kept tied up in a ponytail with two green balls, and two velvet rose earrings.
Today was dressed in a long black dress with that exposed her shoulders and a bit of her upper back, as well as showed off a small bit of her cleavage. It was the most feminine thing I'd ever seen her wear and the big red rose design at the bottom of the dress combined with golden neckless she wore really brought the whole ensemble together.
My name is Kyosuke Kusanagi, and if it wasn't obvious enough already, I have a huge crush on Makoto Kino. The reason for the fancy dress was because of Juban's new hotspot that just so happened to be a dance club. Not wanting to look out of place I was dressed in a black suit and tie with flowing red cape and matching bird mask that covered my eyes and nose.
I was too scared to talk to Kino when I saw her in school and so I resorted to just slipping poems I didn't write into her locker. It was the best way for me to get my feelings out there until I somehow mustered up the courage to talk to her myself. That is until my friend Umino told me about this place and how it had a dress code.
I could be anonymous here. I could finally talk to Kino without her knowing who I am, not that she would have anyway without the safety and security my mask provided. An unfortunate result of my cowardice. Nevertheless, I was here, I was committed, and Kino was in the corner of the room talking to her friends as loud music blared.
I gulped nervously and reached into my pocket for the pack of breath mints I brought along. There was no way I was going to screw this up. You only got one chance to make a good first impression after all. I chewed them up fast and made my way over to the group of six.
I had to remind myself too not be nervous. I was a complete unknown, a nobody. Just another face in the crowd that was looking to get down on the dance floor with the most beautiful girl in the room. I could do this. I could do this.
With my resolve steeled I stopped in front of the giggling group and gave the brightest smile I could towards the tall girl in the black dress. "May I have this dance?"
I extend my gloved hand to the now surprised girl, hoping beyond hope that she'd take it. It would be really awkward if she didn't. Fortunately, she did after the initial surprise wore off and she allowed me to escort her to the dance floor. As we reached the center the voice of an angel began to play over the loudspeaker.
The sound of Miki Matsubara's voice calmed any lingering nerves I might've still had from being so close to my crush and thankfully the lighting hid my growing blush.
We quickly fell in step with the music and went through a rapid serious of motions. Kino was so elegant on the dance floor, like it was a stage meant for her. The way she stepped and twirled spoke volumes of the time she dedicated to dance. Clearly, she was no rookie.
As for me I wasn't too shabby myself. I never dedicated my time to dance or anything, but I could hold my own on the dance floor. I guess I'll have to thank my sister for having me practice with her and I definitely have to give a big thanks to my friend Umino for telling me about this place.
As the song continued, I could see the smile on Kino's face grow and I could feel my own doing the same. Next came a more complex motion as we link hands and spun around the other. We then moved in closer and shifted our shoulders and hips in a near synchronized motion.
I could feel a thin layer of sweat start to form on my brow because of the suit but I didn't care, I was having far too much fun. I would've never had the courage to dance let alone talk with Kino if not for the mask.
I could tell the song was starting to wind down now and so could Kino. We concluded the song with one last maneuver which resulted in me leaning over to support her as she was leaned back into my arm. Like this I could swear she was blushing just as much as I was, but then again that could've just been the lights playing tricks on me.
We didn't move though, or even say words. For a moment it was like the world had vanished leaving only just the two of us. Unfortunately, wasn't just the two of us and we were starting to attract some stairs. I helped her up and was reminded how tall she actually was when I had to crane my neck to meet her gaze. "Sorry about that."
The sound of my voice brought her back to reality. "Oh, you don't need to apologize. I'm the one who's sorry for freezing up like that."
I let out a low chuckle. "How about we agree we're both at fault and leave it at that."
"Deal." she smiled at me. It had gone silent again between us except for the overwhelming sounds of song and dance. Now was a good as time as any to take my leave. Hopefully my exit is as dramatic as I pictured it in my head.
I lift up my sleeve and stare into my watch. "Sorry..." I began. "But it's time for me to depart."
Kino looked surprised again. "You have to go already?"
"Yeah." I answered sounding a little disappointed. I didn't really want to go now but all the confidence I had had now been depleted and my cowardice was quickly filling the void it left behind. Besides, it wasn't like she wouldn't see me again.
"Will I see you again?" she asked. "I really enjoyed dancing with you."
My smile returned. "Of course, when I come back, we'll dance again. As long as you want."
Seeing her smile made my heart fluttered.
"My names Makoto Kino by the way." she introduced herself shyly.
"My friends call me Kyo." I finally introduced myself. A nickname was all I could give her now.
"Kyo." she whispered, as if tasting the name on her tongue.
"That's right." I nod before turning my back to leave through the crowd. "Until we meet again Makoto Kino."
I left the dance club that day feeling a lot lighter than I had been in a very long time. One day I would introduce myself to her proper. I removed my cape and mask and ran a hand through my dark hair.
"One day."
FIN!
Author's Note: The song for Kyo and Makoto's dace is "Stay with Me" by Miki Matsubara.
