He answers to that Witch's words "Even if you reject me, I will never forget you"
Subaru looks around him, only to find a sea of blood washing at his feet, the beautiful moonlight in the red tinted sky shining on the now dead Archbishop of Pride. This was his new home after achieving satisfaction upon his death but a shadow of the witch envelops around him–and it speaks
"I love you…but I can't let you rest yet" Subaru's eyes widened at that witch's words, must he be taken back to that world of pain?
"I don't understand…why do I have to go back" Subaru had a worried look on his face
"You've accomplished your goal…but mine hasn't yet" Subaru felt confused about what goal the witch could possibly have "You must go back…and kill me" Subaru felt a small shock, the witch wants him to kill her?
"I seriously don't understand…"
"You made a promise to me…a promise that said you'll save me" Subaru felt a greater amount of shock run throughout his body, he thought back to when he said that–back in that loot house
He had made that promise to the woman he knew as Emilia, but remembered at that moment of his first death, he'd actually made that promise for a woman he knew as Satella. Furthermore he had made that promise to Satella 87 more times before his subsequent escape from that hell of a first loop
"But how does killing you mean saving you?"
"Subaru…you will understand exactly why, when it happens…"
"But..but I've done it right? I accomplished my one goal, I made Emilia the ultimate hero by letting her slay me, I died in satisfaction so can I rest…can I rest from that hell?"
"I can't let that happen…Subaru you're already close to fulfilling that wish of mine…now that you have all 7 witch factors…It won't take much longer before you can kill me" Subaru didn't want to listen, he wanted this to be it, this to be his ending. He didn't want to go back, he didn't want Emilia to look him in the eye again and cry.
"Why should I listen!? I've told you already my journey is over, I became the ultimate villain and died, that's how the story is supposed to end!"
"Because I love you, love you, love you, love you, love you, love you…" a part of Subaru wanted to ignore Satella's answer as being one of a madwoman but another part asked him to think more about what she meant
"You love me…but why"
"Because a very long time ago, you taught me to love…you are my everything" Subaru's head went down
"And who was I in your life to be worthy enough of being loved with kindness"
"You will find that answer when you kill me" the witch smiled
Subaru thought more about Satella's words, she loves me that much? Subaru thought back about his ability given to him by that witch, [[Return By Death]]
And his mind imploded with regret when he realized–
When he was writhing in the burning sensation of pain, caused by a blade that cut his stomach open, she gave him unconditional love
When he cried in silent pain as he was bleeding out from a stab to the back, she gave him unconditional love
When he refused to swallow his pride and instead killed the three thugs whilst feeling the thrill of murdering them, she gave him unconditional love
When he saw the one he cared most about die such a pointless and brutal death, only to suffer the same fate no matter how many times he tried to save her, she gave him unconditional love
When he looked at the person who could've only be seen as the epitome of heroic chivalry with disgust and hate, vowing to rid the world of that hero whilst he effortlessly vanquished evil, she gave him unconditional love
When he willingly joined the organization that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents through its insanity, she gave him unconditional love
When he felt the pain of his arms and legs being twisted by a madman's invisible hands, she gave him unconditional love
When his mind was taken over by a madman and was forced to be put out of his misery, she gave him unconditional love
When he betrayed and killed the madman he grew to have considered his friend, she gave him unconditional love
When he abducted and caged a mentally broken man in order to turn him into his slave, she gave him unconditional love
When he convinced 53 wives to burn themselves to death along with their mansion, she gave him unconditional love
When he mutilated and threw a man into a fire, considering the noise of insects to be more preferable to his screams of pain, she gave him unconditional love
When he trapped a merchant into debt slavery, someone he considered capable of being good friends with him in an alternate world, she gave him unconditional love
When he went on to slay the evil cult that's been plaguing the world for the past 400 years in the span of a single year, she gave him unconditional love
When he went on to kill every hero that he considered a threat to his goal, including using the betrayal of trust between former friends, she gave him unconditional love
When he went on to commit every conceivable crime and atrocity to innocent people, just to add infamy to his name, she gave him unconditional love
When he burned an entire nation down to the ground, engulfing millions of innocent lives into a charred inferno, she gave him unconditional love
When he sacrificed every friend or accomplice of his, just to get closer to defeating the seemingly invincible hero, she gave him unconditional love
When he broke down into tears in front of the hero he hated and vowed to kill, pouring out his cries that he always wanted to be like him, she gave him unconditional love
When he met the woman that he had loved from the very first day he arrived in that cruel land, asking her to hate him and remember him for the villain he was, she gave him unconditional love
When he felt the tear of that woman he loved fall on his cheek, smiling and only telling her that he loved her before dying, she gave him unconditional love
Even after all of that, she gave him unconditional love. Subaru recognized that and felt the weakness in his throat, struggling to give her any of his words. He could only cry in that moment
"Can you understand my love…Subaru?"
It felt eerily familiar to the love he felt for Emilia
"I'll do it" Subaru takes a deep breath, ready to be thrown into that world of torment again
"Thank you…Subaru-kun" Subaru raised an eyebrow at the smiling witch but soon forgot about what she just said
"Where am I being sent back to, I doubt that Meilee's dead body being in my arms would be a good save point"
"After the death of Capella, when you obtained the last witch factor, but before the death of any knights or villagers" Subaru smiled at what that meant
"So you think I should try to be a hero?"
"It matters not if you're the hero or villain, I will still love you" Satella got closer to Subaru
"But promise me that you can satisfy my selfish goal before yours" Satella whispered into Subaru's ear
"I can do that…Satella" Subaru grabbed hold of Satella's black hood
"I'll be Emilia's hero this time, and yours as well" Subaru took off Satella's hood and was surprised with awe at her beauty
"You look just like her" Subaru was smiling gleefully
"I love you"
"And I love you too" Subaru kissed Satella, causing her face to burn red
The red mist vanished, and he could no longer see the moon or feel the blood at his feet. Subaru knew he would soon be back in that world, and he smiled.
Subaru woke up in a familiar place, he wonders how many months ago it was when he first started committing atrocities. He looks to his side and sees Elsa peacefully sleeping on his shoulder and Meilee with her head on his lap, they were sleeping on a couch after a long day of defeating Mother Capella. His fire spirit was still at his side, not having been vanquished by Reinhardt, Blue was still at his side, and he hadn't met the man who could've been his friend. If Subaru was to look at himself at his current state, he could at best think of himself being an Anti-Hero, though that will change.
This time around Subaru Natsuki, Archbishop of Pride, will prove himself worthy enough to be considered Emilia's hero. He had a promise to fulfill.
