Chapter 1: A Party

It was March 11th, and Bessie Milligan was in her room, at her desk doing a little homework. When she finished, she looked at her calendar, and flipped it to the next month.

"Yes, it's on a Saturday this year." she said to herself.

Baxter, her pet pig who was lying on the floor squealed.

"I know Baxter."

Then there was a knock at her door.

"Come in."

Her dad opened the door, and came in.

"You finish your homework, Bessie?" asked Mr. Milligan.

"Just did, Dad." she answered.

"And I saw that my birthday is on a Saturday this year."

"Is it now. Great day for a birthday. And anyway it's dinner time."

He grabbed the handles on Bessie's wheelchair, and wheeled her out of the room, and Baxter followed.

In the dining room, the family had a dinner of baked chicken, while Baxter ate some pig food.

"So Bessie are you looking forward to turning 12?" asked Mrs. Milligan.

"Yeah, I'm looking forward to my birthday this year." Bessie replied.

"Do you know what you want to do?" Mr. Milligan wondered.

"I don't know yet."

Her parents then looked at each other, then back at her.

"Bessie your father and I were wondering if you'd like to have a party this year?" Mrs. Milligan suggested.

Bessie couldn't believe her ears.

"A party? Seriously?"

Both her parents nodded. Bessie had never really had a party for her birthday before, and the thought of finally having one was amazing.

The next day at school, before the first bell rang Bessie was on her phone. She was so into it, she didn't notice Lincoln and his friends coming up to her.

"Hey, Bessie." said Lincoln.

Bessie snapped out of her thoughts, and looked at them.

"Oh hi guys." she greeted.

"What are you doing?" asked Clyde.

"My birthday's coming up, and my parents said I could have a party."

"That's awesome." replied Stella.

"Especially since this'll be my first party."

"You mean since you left Growing Lives?" wondered Liam.

"No my first birthday party ever."

The others were confused. Then Bessie began to explain. When she and her parents lived in the apartment, they didn't have much money for parties so her birthday just consisted of a cake, a couple presents, and a maybe a dinner out.

When she lived at Growing Lives, the supervisors got her cake, and her parents would visit her.

"But now things are different. And I can have one now." Bessie finished.

"That's crazy." said Liam.

"I know, but this year my birthday will probably be the best one yet."

"Are we gonna be invited to this party?" questioned Rusty.

"Of course."

"Awesome." cheered Zack.

"I just need to decide what kind of party I want."

Just then, the bell rang telling the kids it was time for school to start. And so the kids went inside. Though Bessie tried to pay attention to her lessons, but she couldn't stop thinking about the great party she wanted to have.

But what kind of party should it be? What should the theme be? And what kinds of things did she want in it?

Once school was over, Bessie asked her mom to take her straight home so she could do more research. Online she researched birthday party ideas for someone her age.

"Hmm, beach party, red carpet movie premiere, camp out." she read.

While they were good ideas, they didn't seem right for her.

"There must be something here."

Baxter squealed at her.

"What is it, Baxter?"

He trotted to the wall, and pointed to the clock. Bessie looked at it, and realized.

"Oh, it's almost time for Dessert Wars. Thanks boy, I almost forgot."

She wheeled herself to the living room, and she turned on the TV. When she show started, the judge introduced the contestants.

"And here we have Nicolette from France."

The woman appeared wearing a pink t-shirt with a sparkly white picture of the Eiffel Tower on the front, jeans, and white shoes.

"Bonjour, everyone." she greeted happily.

"Wow, she's from France? It must be cool to live there."

Bessie's mind then began wander. Paris was considered the City of Lights, it had an interesting history, and the food and culture were great. Just then a light bulb went off in Bessie's mind.

"Mom, Dad, I know what kind of party I want."

And she wheeled off to find them.
