Nathan looked out the window as the rain poured down. Why of all days did it have to rain? Nathan looked at the picnic basket sitting on the table. This picnic was going to be a first date with Elizabeth and himself. After breaking off her courtship with Lucas, Elizabeth told Nathan that he was calling her heart and that she was ready to listen. Nathan thought a picnic would be the perfect first date. Both of them enjoying nature and each other. But the rain decided to ruin the day.
"Allie, I'll be right back" Nathan said to Allie. She nodded. He grabbed his umbrella and put on his rain boots and walked over to Elizabeth's. He knocked on the door.
"Nathan" Elizabeth said.
"Hello Elizabeth. Beautiful day for a picnic" Nathan joked. Elizabeth laughed and invited him in. Nathan left his umbrella outside and took his boots off outside. Elizabeth had the fire going and it was nice and warm in the house. Jack was playing by the fire.
"It's really coming down out there" Elizabeth said.
"Yes it is. Unfortunately, I don't see it letting up anytime soon and this isn't optimal weather for a picnic. It looks like we have to reschedule out date" Nathan said.
Elizabeth frowned but began to smile again.
"Who says the picnic has to be outside?" Elizabeth said. Nathan started smiling.
"We can have it inside, as long as you don't mind having Jack as a guest." Elizabeth said.
Nathan laughed.
"Of course not, he is good company" Nathan said.
"In fact, why don't you bring Allie over too. This can make up for that dinner that I rudely cancelled at the last minute." Elizabeth said.
"She'll love that" Nathan said. Nathan told Elizabeth that he would be back with Allie and their supplies for a picnic. Nathan walked back home.
"Allie" Nathan said.
"Yes?" Allie said.
"Mrs. Thornton has kindly invited you and I for an inside picnic." Nathan said.
"But I thought you and Mrs. Thornton were going on a picnic today." Allie asked.
"We were but as you can see it is raining outside and she did not want to cancel our date. And she really wants you to join us." Nathan said.
Allie smiled.
"Okay. Let me go get changed" Allie said. Nathan nodded his head. As Allie ran upstairs, Nathan looked at his picnic basket. Since they were going to be inside, he needed to rethink what to bring. Nathan grabbed some bread and cheese and put in the basket. He grabbed the marshmellows, graham crackers and chocolate. He grabbed a few pieces of fruit and put it in the basket. By the time he was finished packing the basket, Allie was ready to go. They grabbed their umbrellas and put on their rainboots. They walked over to Elizabeth's house and knocked on the door. Elizabeth invited them in. They left their umbrellas and boots outside. Nathan carried his basket over to the kitchen while Allie went over to Jack.
"What are we having for lunch?" Elizabeth asked.
Nathan pulled out cheese and bread.
"Bread and cheese, interesting" Elizabeth said with a smile.
"I'm going to make my famous grilled cheese sandwich." Nathan said with a smile.
"You are?" Allie asked with excitement.
"Yes I am" Nathan said.
"Mrs. Thornton. His grilled cheese sandwiches are the best!" Allie said.
"Really. Now I'm intrigued" Elizabeth said.
"You two ladies go into the room with Jack and I'll make them." Nathan said.
The two went into the room and got on the floor to play with Jack.
Meanwhile, Nathan looked in Elizabeth's spice rack. He found he was looking for and started the stove. He waited until the stove was hot and put the bread on them. He added the spices and flipped over the bread and put the cheese on the bread and waited for it to melt. Elizabeth stood next to him.
"It has been a long time since a man has cooked for me." Elizabeth said.
"Really?" Nathan said.'
"Yes. The last time was after Jack and I were married. He made breakfast but he burnt everything" Elizabeth laughed.
Nathan laughed.
"Better not ask me to make breakfast because you'll probably get the same thing. I'm terrible at making breakfast. Except for pancakes" Nathan said.
"I love a good pancake" Elizabeth said.
"Next time" Nathan said.
"We'll see how the grilled cheese goes and then we'll see if there is a next time" Elizabeth teased.
"No pressure" Nathan teased back.
Nathan finished the sandwiches and let them cool down. Nathan and Elizabeth put out a blanket for all four of them. Elizabeth offered to make hot chocolate. Nathan brought the sandwiches out and Elizabeth brought the hot chocolate and they sat on the blanket for their picnic.
"Mmm" Elizabeth said as she took a bite of the grilled cheese.
"Good?" Nathan asked.
"Very" Elizabeth said.
Nathan took a sip of his hot chocolate.
"That is hands down my favorite hot chocolate I have ever had." Nathan said.
"My parents sent the chocolate from Hamilton" Elizabeth said.
Nathan nodded and drank his hot chocolate.
After lunch, all four played charades and a game where you have to guess what the person is drawing. After playing games, they made s'mores in the fire. Nathan helped Jack make his s'more. Jack started to get fussy, so Elizabeth put Jack down for his nap. Allie decided she wanted to go home and left. It was just Nathan and Elizbeth.
"Looks like it is just the two of us" Nathan said putting another log on the fire.
"Looks like it" Elizabeth said. Elizabeth was sitting on the couch and made room for Nathan to sit. Nathan sat next to Elizabeth and put a blanket over them.
"I haven't had this much fun in a long time" Elizabeth said.
"I'm glad you had a nice time" Nathan said.
"I really did" Elizabeth said.
Nathan smiled.
"I feel like I'm getting back to who I used to be. Courageous. After Jack died, I was scared to let anyone in. If I'm honest, I wasn't completely letting Lucas in. But maybe that is because he wasn't the right one for me. But I am ready to let you in." Elizabeth said turning his head toward him.
Nathan looked at Elizabeth and put his face towards her. He stopped as he got close to her lips. He wanted to make sure this is what she wanted. She moved her head toward him and reached his lips. The two kissed. They kissed slowly at first introducing their lips to one another. But the kiss slowly began to become passionate. This kiss was an expression that they had been waiting to express. It was two people coming together and showing their love to one another without having to say the words.
