"Come on, Iwa-chan, let's get in line!" Oikawa tugged on his friend's coat sleeve, dragging him to the rollercoaster, its shadows of ear-splitting screams towered over them and the surrounding park goers.
Seijoh had been invited to a Tokyo powerhouse training camp, and they were given one free day to spend as they pleased. Most of the boys decided to go to the much-famed amusement park nearby. Many teams were there, even their ill-fated rivals Shiratorizawa.
Seijoh's setter smirked at the thought of the ace of Shirotirzawa doing anything remotely called "fun." Ushiwaka didn't even have that word in his vocabulary, for sure.
"Yo,Trashykawa, slow down." Iwaizumi grumbled behind him.
"Aww! Is poor Iwa-chan afraid of rides?" Oikawa innocently asked, quickly throwing up his hands to block the headbutt that came straight at his face.
"At least I don't squeal like a girl." Seijoh's ace muttered, thrusting his hands in his coat pockets.
"I do not!" Oikawa yelped before lowering his voice after receiving a few glares. "Hey, I do not."
"Whatever you say, Crappy-kawa."
"You're so cruel to me!"
Making their way closer to the front line, a ride attendant called out, "I need a single rider. Anyone want to come to the front?"
Oikawa nonchalantly peered over everyone in front of him, an advantage of his tall stature and his eyes brightened when he saw a rather cute girl standing near the attendant. "Iwa-chan! You don't mind if we don't ride together, do you?"
"If it saves me from going deaf, no." Iwaizumi shrugged.
Not even paying attention to the insult, Oikawa grinned as he raised his hand, calling out that he would be a single rider.
The worker ushered him to the front, but to Oikwa's great disappointment, he saw that he was walking past the pretty girl.
The attendant pointed him to his seat, but Oikawa paid no mind as he patted the back of his head sheepishly. "What about her?"
The attendant glanced back before scampering over to the girl, bowing low. "Sorry! I need one more single rider."
Iwaizumi stepped forward, and upon seeing the girl and a crushed Oikawa, he gave his friend a knowing and evil grin before allowing the cute girl to step inside the coaster first in the very last row.
"Iwa-chan, you traitor," Oikawa muttered.
The attendant cleared his throat, and Oikawa fumed as he plopped down and strapped himself in.
"Hello, Oikawa."
The setter froze just as the safety harness snapped around his chest.
No. Not that voice. Oikawa turned slowly, his heart nearly imploding inside his chest.
Ushijima Wakatoshi, his sworn enemy on the court, the one he declared he would demolish and finally go to nationals. His nemesis, of all people, in all of the hundreds of people that came today, sat in the seat next to him.
"No." Oikawa muttered, closing his eyes and banging his head on the seat's headrest. His focus had been on the cute girl that he didn't even notice who was the other single rider.
"I see you enjoy roller coasters as well."
"Damn it," Oikawa thought. "Ushijima," He finally spoke after finding his voice. "Didn't think roller coasters were your thing?"
"They're fine." The ace replied stoically. Oikawa wanted to laugh...or maybe cry. Both probably.
Jolting forward, Oikawa found himself trapped as the coaster started moving, climbing up the track.
This arrogant jerk who never even showed the tiniest hint of emotion was riding a roller coaster? These were for fun-loving thrill-seeking people who enjoyed screaming and- Oh no.
Just as Oikawa remembered that he was a screamer, the ride dipped. His shrieks were the loudest amongst the other exhilarated screams, and Oikawa clung to the side handlebars as the ride swerved and raced around.
When the ride finally settled for a moment's calm, Oikawa got his bearings, and then he felt funny. His left hand clasped tightly to something, but it wasn't the metallic sensation that his right hand gripped onto.
Slowly glancing down, The setter's eyes bulged. His hand had unknowingly reached out and grabbed his sworn rival, Ushijima's hand.
Without a word, Oikawa ripped his hand away, hoping that somehow (miraculously) Ushijima didn't notice.
"Oikawa."
"Just kill me now." Oikawa muttered when he heard his name. Then, after a moment's pause, he glimpsed at the Ace's unreadable face, trying his best to act nonchalant.
"If you are scared," Ushijima blinked. "You can continue holding my hand because we're about to dip again."
Oikawa screamed.
This time, it wasn't from the coaster plummeting down the tracks.
…
Iwaizumi stood waiting for Oikawa, a smirk on his lips, ready to boast about how the pretty girl gave him her number, but his face soon melted into a scowl when he saw Ushijima striding behind his friend.
"What are you doing here?" He directed at Ushijima when suddenly Oikawa yanked him by his hoodie, dragging him away.
"Let's go, Iwa-Chan."
The grave tone struck Iwaizumi odd, and he looked up at Oikawa. His captain's face was white as a sheet, his forehead dropping beads of sweat.
"Uh, hey, are you ok?"
"Kill me!" Oikawa cried, shaking his friend by the shoulders as soon as they got out of sight of the other ace. "Just kill me right now! I know you've always wanted to!"
"What? No way!"
"I don't want to live!" Oikawa sobbed, falling to his knees.
Iwaizumi smacked Oikawa upside the head. "Shut up, will ya? If I'm going to kill you, it won't be when you're begging me to do it."
"How will I live?" Oikawa whispered.
"What happened?"
"We… we held hands. I held his hand on the roller coaster. I didn't mean to, but when I was screaming, I must have reached out for it."
Iwaizumi blinked twice. Then his mouth twitched upwards before bursting into a hysterical fit of laughter. "You… held… you held his hand?" He howled.
Oikawa immediately came to his senses and jumped back to his feet. "Don't laugh, Iwa-chan!" He whined, pointing a finger accusingly at him. "It looks weird on you!"
"Boke!" Iwaizumi snarled. "I happen to laugh a lot, for your information. Well, I wonder if Ushijima will tell his teammates."
"I'm dead if he does! That'll get around to our school!" Oikawa cried out in horror. "I could never show my face again.
Iwazumi cleared his throat and crossed his arms sternly. "Well, that's what you deserve for ditching me to try and sit next to a cute girl. Serves you right."
"Iwa-chan! You're the worst!" Oikawa pouted.
"I'm sure Ushiwaka has better things to do then share what happened. And we'll make sure to never speak of it."
"Not even to Matsu and Maki," The setter murmured solemnly.
"Especially not to those two." Iwaizumi nodded just as soberly. "Come on, let's go. I'm getting hungry."
Oikawa sighed and stretched to his feet. After a loud sigh, he began rambling on that if he bumped into Ushijima again; he would threaten him with secrecy or bury him alive.
Iwaizumi only half-listened to his friend's dramatics. When Oikawa wasn't looking, the ace of Seijoh smothered a fit of laughter behind the palm of his hand as he took out his phone and texted a group chat between him and Maki and Matsu. He'd tell them, of course. They'll never let Oikawa forget this for as long as he lives.
A/N: Thank you to those who read my very first attempt at Haikyu fanfiction. Should I be working on many my other unfinished stories? Yes, absolutely, mmhhm. But I had this piece deep in my google docs and finally decided to pull it out for fun. I hope this short story and the characters were enjoyable
Stay happy and healthy!
