Amira's pov:

Growing up at home was always tricky, but our parents made sure we had everything Sierra and I needed. We were inseparable my sister and I being that we knew what we were but that didn't change the fact that we had to be protected. I remember when we were six, my mom had moved us to the closet.

"Stay here." Mom said

We stayed quiet as she went to the door, we'd not even noticed as we listened. "General..what do we owe the visit?" Mom asked as I listened to her but then Sierra was looking at me..or more my neck. I hadn't even realized it but Sierra whispered in my ear "Amira..you have a mark on your neck." Sierra said as I just looked at her.

Mom said when a mark appears on a female Grisha her Grisha soulmate is close by...but I'm six. I thought

I still listened though since I'd wondered what was happening "It's been a few years, since your retirement. Surely you have had a child now..one that's Grisha to take your spot as promised." the General said as I knew that Sierra and I were hidden. "We have two daughters but they're not Grisha." Dad said as I knew that was a lie. "Oh, well you wouldn't mind if I go see the-" but before the General could finish I heard mom say. "They're sick..high fevers so we have to keep them in their rooms." Mom said

I realized that both of our parents lied as Sierra looked at me "The black General.." Sierra said as I nod. It was when he left were we allowed to go to our rooms and of course I saw the marking on my neck as I looked in my morror..it was black! It was a symbol, one I'd known of anywhere from the book mom showed us..his symbol. I walked to my window to see the General examine his wrists yet I crouched low so he didn't see me. I heard him though as he started to laugh "Oh Amara, you lied..one of your daughters is Grisha and from these markings a powerful one. I'll let it be for now and come for her when she's eighteen."

The General said as a man walked over. "General, are we leaving?" the accent clear as day as I looked at them. "Yes, Fedyor." The General said but as I watched Fedyor noticed the General's wrist..one of them. "You're close to your Grisha soulmate..sir." Fedyor said "A Sun Summoner.." "Amara's girls had fevers..even so the odds are unlikely and it could be anyone I have met yet.." The General said as he looked back at the house and I think he noticed me as I hid beside my window against the wall.

I listened as he got in his carriage and left, I felt the tingling leave as I relaxed and walked to the bed. Sierra came in and got on the bed with me as we laid there and smiled. "Black Generals gonna come sweep you away someday." She teased as I shook my head. "I love the fact you can joke, but no." I said "Dad will never allow it."

Sierra's pov:

Amira fell asleep after our teasing but I know what I saw on her neck as I kissed my twin sister's forehead. "I don't want him to take you away." I said softly to her as I fell asleep by her. I never wanted to let anyone take my twin sister away, no man human or Grisha. It was always like this and for the next few years we were always inseparable well except when Nicolas came over.

Nicolas and Amira were also inseparable but Amira always tried to involve me in but it wasn't the same. Every time testers had came Amira and I were in the woods with Nicolas watching them. Again mom would say we were sick but the truth was we were outside of the house. I felt out of place though cause Amira had a Grisha soulmate and I'd always watched my own neck but nothing.

Is my soulmate not Grisha? I thought

I envied my sister even though we were still young but she had a powerful Grisha soulmate. I knew we were still kids and that didn't mean I couldn't be envious or jealous that she was going to be with someone. Though I knew dad was never going to allow it, he'd made it clear that the heretic was the last person allowed around us.

As we were growing up it wasn't long till we were ten and we were out again but Amira was the one who climbed a tree. I followed but was unsure and Nicolas followed behind us as we all sat on a tree limb. Amira was laughing as she was always carefree but then I noticed it starting to show again.. "Sis..your soulmate is close by." I teased but that shut her up. Amira just looked at me like I was crazy.

Soon though we watched below as a horse was going by and the black General was on it. He stopped though as he seemed to be looking at his wrists. "Sun Summoner and Tidemaker..how strange. Does this mean I have one soulmate or two?" The General's voice said as we watched. Perhaps we shouldn't been staring so much cause he looked up at the tree. "You can come out.." He said

Amira panicked as she moved to another limb of the tree but then she slipped as Nicolas locked his legs around his limb and grabbed her hand as he held her close. Amira unfortunately came face to face with the General this way. "Well well, you're just a child..both of you are." He said as Nicolas looked at him "We're just having fun..we'll go soon." Nicolas assured him as he pulled Amira up or tried to but he didn't have that kind of strength to as I saw the General reach for Amira and helped her to the ground.

"Hey!" Nicolas said as he pulled himself up and then got down as he stood infront of Amira. "We didn't need the help.." "She would have fallen and been hurt." The general said but even I noticed Amira was quiet. She wouldn't even look at the General and I looked down as I climbed down and hugged her. "Twin girls.." The General said as we both looked at him with wide eyes. He got off his horse as he approached us but Amira shook her head and she must have had her hair moving cause his look was unreadable. Shock maybe?

"what are you?" The General asked my sister but she looked at him and she didn't answer as the three of us just ran. He tried to use his shadows but Amira was smart and led us in a bush, needless to say we hid there for awhile. "I know you're here..you can't hide forever we will meet again." The General said

We stayed like that for some time before he finally left and I knew then..nothing we did would keep Amira from the General. It was only a matter of time.
