Looked up at the sky and it was maroon.

Meredith looked over at Addison and smiled. They were both stretched out on the picnic blanket Addison had brought. When they had started this, Meredith had no idea that Addison was such a romantic. She was always planning these cute little dates. Anything to make Meredith smile, she made her feel more special than anyone ever had. Not that Meredith had much experience dating, the only other person she had was Derek and he had never put much effort in.

Not even after he and Addison divorced and he was trying to get her back. Although to be fair, it's not like he knew he was competing with anyone. He didn't know that in the time he had been trying to make it work with Addison, she had lost her feelings for him and gained feelings for her. In the months after Addison had arrived, Meredith had multiple chances to date other people but she had declined them all. She was pretty sure he had thought that she was waiting for him. The look on his face when he found out had been one of shock, anger, and betrayal. But that was not something Meredith wanted to be thinking about right now. Not when she could be thinking about Addison.

"Stop looking at me." Addison said as she turned her head to meet Meredith's eyes. "You're missing the sunset."

"The sunset's got nothing on you." Meredith replied with a grin on her face.

"Hey. I'm supposed to be the cheesy one."

Meredith shrugged. "I can't help it around you."

Addison laughed and blushed a little. She moved to pull Meredith into her lap and laid them both back. "There. Now you have no choice but to appreciate this beautiful display nature has put on for you."

"Just for me?" Meredith laughed.

"Of course."

Meredith turned her attention to the sky with a pleased smile on her face and they spent the next few minutes in silence, watching the sun descend into the sky. "I've never seen the sky so maroon, it's beautiful."

"Almost as beautiful as you."

The burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into me.

Although Addison had seen Meredith drunk many times, the situation had never been reversed. Until now at least. Addison's best friend, Naomi, was in town and while Meredith finished her shift they headed to Joe's. When Meredith found them a few hours later they were thoroughly trashed. Meredith kind of liked the role reversal. Addison was always looking out for her, looking after her and it was nice to be able to do the same for her. Although to be fair, Meredith was pretty sure she handled her alcohol a lot better than Addison.

She sat at the bar smiling while watching Addison dancing with Naomi. She loved seeing her so happy, she knew Addison missed her friends and she was pleased they had a chance to catch up. Addison's eyes found hers and she gestured wildly for Meredith to join them. Not being able to say no to her, she stood up and joined them. Dancing with them, she threw her head back laughing at their questionable moves.

Addison grabbed her hand and pulled her closer, forgetting about the drink in her hand. The red wine splashed up all over Meredith's white shirt and soaked through.

"Shit. Baby, I'm so sorry!" Addison slurred.

It just made Meredith laugh more and she grabbed the glass out of her hand. "Okay Addie, I think that's enough for you tonight."

"Are we going home?" Addison asked with a pout on her face.

The pout was so cute that Meredith couldn't resist giving her a quick peck on the lips. "Yes baby, it's late and you are already definitely going to regret this in the morning."

Addison looked at Meredith with a dreamy expression. "I love it when you look after me."

Meredith reached for her hand and gave her a squeeze. "I'll always look after you."

And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was maroon.

The door slammed shut after Meredith and Addison stumbled through, more focused on each other than their steps. Addison had taken Meredith out for dinner and Meredith had gotten a little tipsy. This meant that she was also very horny. As Addison had driven home, Meredith's hand had been wandering and she had never liked Addison's skirts more. She would always be a fan of quick access.

So now they were both horny and clothes were flying as they ascended the stairs. Neither cared if Meredith's roommates were around, it wouldn't be the first time they had unintentionally put on a show and it probably wouldn't be the last time. They finally reached Meredith's room and fell onto the bed together. Helping each other out of their remaining clothes, their lips not leaving each other.

Addison pulled back from the kiss and surveyed Meredith's body thoroughly. She brushed Meredith's cheek lovingly as she spoke. "You're so gorgeous. I'm so damn lucky."

The blood rushed to Meredith's cheeks as she bit her lip and looked up at Addison through her lashes shyly. "No one's ever made me feel like you do. I think I'm in love with you."

Addison's face broke into a breathtaking smile. "I know I'm in love with you."

The mark they saw on my collarbone.

Meredith and Addison were sitting in the cafeteria, enjoying their lunch when Christina plodded down in the spare seat.

"God I'm bored today. Is it bad that I'm praying for an MVC or something to make this day a little more interesting?" Christina asked.

Meredith laughed. "Probably, but we're already going to hell anyway so I don't think it matters."

"You two are just as bad as each other." Addison sighed.

Meredith grinned at her. "Lucky you love me."

Christina gagged. "God, you two are disgusting."

"Says you, I swear every supply closest I go in you're there with Burke. You should learn how to lock the door, there are some things I just don't want to see." Meredith said.

Christina shot her a glare but something made her narrow her eyes and focus on Meredith's neck. "What's that?" She asked, pulling her collar down slightly. The sight made her burst out laughing. "What are you two? Teenagers? Giving out hickeys like you're in high school."

Meredith swatted her hand away and looked at Addison who had gone bright red. She giggled when Addison stumbled out a reply. "Well lucky I have a turtleneck in my locker. I better go change so it doesn't get out that Addie is possessive as fuck."

This just made Addison's cheeks blush further and Christina let out another gag. Addison panicked slightly at the thought of being left alone with Christina. She liked her girlfriend's best friend but she was obviously in a mood. She stood up and followed Meredith.

It would have been better if she had stayed because Christina decided it would be a good idea to yell out after them. "Keep it PG please ladies!"

The rust that grew between telephones.

Meredith stared at the contact lighting up her phone. There had been many times over the past six months where she had navigated her phone here but she had never pressed call. She knew Addison didn't want to hear from her. Not after the way they had left things and not after Addison had run away from her to LA. But that didn't stop her from being the first person Meredith wanted to call for anything. Good or bad, she was the only person Meredith would want to tell.

But she had ruined it, she had ruined them. She could blame it on her daddy issues, her mommy issues, or just her abandonment issues but maybe it was just her. Ruining every goddamn thing she ever touched. But she shouldn't be thinking like that, her therapist wouldn't be happy with that. She could see now that it was her depression that had made her act the way she did. High functioning but self-destructive had been her therapist's assessment.

It still felt like an excuse though, blaming what she had said on her depression. She hated herself for what she had said. She took all the insecurities that Addison had shared with her and threw them back in her face. Addison deserved better which was why she had decided to stay away. She would let Addison live her life and meet someone else, someone better. With one last sigh, she closed her phone and continued on with her day. The torture of living without the love of her life was what she deserved.

The lips I used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon.

It had been years since Meredith had seen Addison but that was about to change. Richard had given her a heads up that she was doing a surgery at Grey Sloan later today. She had considered avoiding her but had decided that she was mature enough to deal with this. She wasn't going to actively seek her out but she also wasn't going to actively avoid her either.

That was what she had been doing when she got a page to the OR that she already knew Addison was in. She looked down at it confused. She was considering ignoring it when Richard appeared at the door of her office.

"Meredith, I know it's a lot to ask but with this bloody heat, Addison really needs someone who is experienced in microvascular anastomosis of the abdomen and you are the only one with that experience."

"Fine." Meredith sighed as she got up and started making her way to the OR. She watched Addison work as she scrubbed and tried to ignore the nervous butterflies in her stomach. She wasn't the same young intern that Addison knew back then, she had her own successful career. She tried to remember this as she entered the OR trying to exude confidence.

"Dr. Grey." Addison said in greeting.

"Dr. Montgomery. Congratulations, uterine transplant." Meredith returned.

"Congratulations to you too. Abdominal wall transplant." Addison shot back with a smile in her voice.

Meredith was glad the blush that graced her cheeks was covered by the mask as her body reacted instinctively to Addison's praise. After a brief awkward moment when Meredith had to interrupt her intern to stop her from continuing to list her accomplishments, they got stuck in.

"So, how have you been?" Addison asked.

Meredith looked up and met her eyes for a brief moment. "I've been good. How about you?"

"I've been okay."

The rest of the surgery passed quickly and it wasn't long until they were both scrubbing out. They both strode past a group of interns who were staring at them and muttering to each other.

"We can hear you." Meredith called out as they walked into the elevator.

After the doors shut they both looked at each other and laughed.

"This place hasn't changed. Still as gossipy as ever." Addison said.

"Some things never change." Meredith replied wistfully.

The change in her tone made Addison look over at her and they kept eye contact for a few seconds until Meredith's eyes flicked down to Addison's lips. She knew she should look away but all she could think about was how those lips used to feel like home. She wondered if they still would. She was about to lean forward to see when the elevator doors opened and her trance was broken.

"It was nice to work with you again Addison." She said sincerely as she left the elevator, leaving Addison staring after her.

And I wake with your memory over me, that's a real fucking legacy.

Meredith had no idea how she had gotten here but she was not complaining. If she hadn't seen her older face in the mirror she would've sworn that she had been taken back 20 years to her late twenties. She couldn't think of any other reason why Addison would be in her room, making her way down her body with soft kisses.

By the time she cleared her stomach, Meredith was squirming desperately. Trying to get any kind of relief. In her whole life, there was no one that could get her as worked up as Addison could, no one who could make her orgasm so violently. That's what she was thinking when Addison finally reached her center. She braced herself for the pleasure that was bound to hit her but it never came.

Instead, a barking dog shook her awake and she swore. Of course, it was a freaking dream. Addison had been haunting her with her fucking legacy for twenty years now. Meredith had tried to put herself out there but she couldn't help but compare everyone she met to Addison. Safe to say every single person came up short. No one could make her feel like Addison had. Not physically or emotionally.

Maybe it was the late night or more likely it was the fact that Meredith had finally seen her after all these years but something made her grab her phone and open the contact that she had routinely stared at over the years. She pressed call before she could change her mind and prayed to a god she didn't believe in that Addison had never changed her number. She listened to the phone ring with her heart in her throat. Just when she was about to give up and hang up, someone answered.

"Meredith?" Addison said sleepily.

Meredith's heart jumped at the fact that Addison had clearly never deleted her number. "Addie."

"Are you okay? Did something happen with my patient?"

"Oh no, well I hope not, I'm not at the hospital."

"Okay… Then why are you calling me at 2am?" Addison asked, confused.

"I… I just…" Meredith started stuttering out. "I miss you, Addie. I've missed you for twenty fucking years and I've been too goddamn stubborn and stupid to do anything about it. And I'm sorry for everything I said back then, everything I did. I don't deserve your forgiveness and I completely understand…"

"Meredith." Addison interrupted. "I've missed you for twenty fucking years as well."
