Even though Red John was dead, the members of the Blake Association remained, and as Jane found out, they held a grudge against him for killing their leader.

Jane had to admit he should have seen this coming sooner. He could have seen it coming sooner, but he had just been… relieved that Red John was finally dead. He knew the Blake Association was still out there, tightly woven into all the American law enforcement agencies that could be named, but Jane trusted the FBI's list of Blake Association members. He trusted they had all been captured. Because he was just so ready to finally put Red John behind him, after years of hunting the serial killer down. And that was what had gotten him captured.

Not just Jane. If it were just himself, he could have handled it. Could have been fine with it. But, as luck would have it, they also took Jane's boyfriend, Kimball Cho.

Cho and Jane hadn't been together that long, but Jane had had feelings for him back when they were in the CBI. Feelings which he easily suppressed, because after what Red John had done to Angela and Kristina, Jane knew it wasn't safe for him to ever be in a romantic relationship. Not until Red John was dead. And after Red John died, and after Jane moved back to America as a member of the FBI, he and Cho began dating. No dramatic confessions of love or anything of the sort, just dating. Maybe one day they could have told each other that they loved the other. Now? That seemed hopeless.

The Blake Association members were tying Jane to a table. He tried to talk to them, to reason with them, but they wouldn't listen. They told him what they planned to do to him. Torture him, make him suffer the same way they had when Red John died. Jane highly doubted their pain was anything other than emotional, and he said so out loud. That ended up with a bullet in his arm. They finally finished tying him to the table and he struggled a bit, quickly finding that the rope had no give. The members of the Blake Association all had wicked grins on their faces, and Jane felt his heart drop.

Where was Cho?

It didn't take long for the Blake Association members to drag Cho in. His eyes met Jane's, and Jane felt despair well up inside him. Whatever the Blake Association planned to do to Jane, they would make Cho watch. It was a horrible feeling, especially knowing he could do nothing to stop it.

(Who was he? Jane wasn't sure what was the correct answer to this question. Maybe it was Jane, unable to stop the Blake Association from dragging Cho in and forcing him to watch. Or maybe it was Cho, unable to stop the Blake Association members from torturing Jane.)

"Hold them down," the leader of the Blake Association said, and Jane had only a moment to appreciate that the leader didn't assume Cho's pronouns before he felt a searing pain course through him.

He hoped he would survive.
