Constantly In Your Shadow

If there was one thing that Maddy Perez was notorious for it was banging on doors until she got a response. But unlike Nate, Cassie wasn't planning to give in. The princess of East Highland's crown had fallen, and she was surely pissed. She demanded Cassie to open up the fucking door. Maddy wanted to beat her ass so bad for going behind her back. However, she was also distraught. Her best friend in the world had just did the most unimaginable thing possible. She stole what was supposed to be the love of her life away from her. Nate and Maddy were together for years. They were the power couple of the school. Everyone knew that. Everyone praised them for it. But Cassie was stuck in the very large shadow that Maddy casted down upon her.
Maddy would never do something like this to Cassie. So why would her best friend betray her like this? Why would she go behind her back after all this time? They were inseparable for years. They did everything together. They supported one another. They were practically soulmates. So why did she do this to Maddy? She wanted to lay hands on her so badly. So. Fucking. Badly. But the Latina also wanted answers.

"Open the fucking door, Cassie!" Maddy cried, placing her head on the door. "You know, I would never do this to you. You were supposed to be my best friend. Open the fucking door!"

"She's not going to. Just come on, let's go." Kat tried to coax Maddy to leave. Why was she fighting a pointless fight? Cassie never cared about Maddy. That's one of the reasons why Kat never liked the blonde either. She was always sneaky and conniving. She had a feeling that one day something like this might have happened. But she wished for her to be wrong.

"She's such a fucking bitch. What did I do to deserve this?" Maddy wept. "Why would she do this to me?"

"Because she's a backstabbing cunt, that's why." Kat answered her, honestly. "Come on, let's just leave."

Tears fell down Cassie's face. Deep down inside she knew that she had down Maddy wrong, but also Nate was fair game. After all, they broke up. She wasn't a home wrecker. After all the two of them were toxic. Poisonous. They were always on again and off again. Nate and Maddy couldn't get along to save their lives. She didn't mean to hurt Maddy, but she just wanted to be seen. Plus, Nate wanted Cassie. He picked her. He was over Maddy, despite him talking about her so much. Nate was a perfect fit for Cassie. It was her turn to be loved and adored. Why was Maddy being so selfish when it came to this? Did she not get enough praise? Did she not get enough love? There was plenty of guys to fawn over Maddy. Nate was outgrowing Maddy. Cassie could see it. Hell, everyone could see it. Yet, Maddy willingly stay ignorant to the situation. Despite everyone trying to be on her side.
Cassie could hear the footsteps of her two friends leaving her room when she finally decided that enough was enough. If Maddy wanted answers, then she'd give them to her. She had to be brave somehow, even if it meant getting a black eye or a red handprint across the face. I mean, that was gracious enough right? To give Maddy what she wanted? Best friends do that, even if they're in the middle of a fight. Plus, Cassie knew that she couldn't stay in this bathroom forever. She was going to have to leave eventually. She also knew that school was tomorrow and whether she liked it or not, Cassie was going to have to face Maddy. But why wait until then? 'Don't be a fucking coward, Cass, just tell her how it is.' The blonde thought to herself.

Cassie whipped open the door and saw Maddy and Kat as they were about to leave. She hollered out her name. "Maddy, wait."

Her best friend turned around. Her mascara staining her face. In a fit of fury, Maddy was about to smack her when Kat stopped her. "No, hold on, Maddy, don't do this—"

"You want to know why I did it? Because he chose me. He's done with you." Cassie boldly stated. "Our entire life I was always second best to you. I was always the one that got the shit end of the deal. You were the one always in the spot light. I was always constantly in your shadow. You never let me have anything. It was always about you."

"What are you talking about, no it wasn't!" Maddy protested.

"Yes, it was!" Cassie fought back. "You were always the one in control. Always the one that had to have it all. You and Nate were broken up. I never split you two up. You did that on your own. You never, ever let me have anything. You never let me have my moment or have anything good in my life. Now finally he noticed me the day of the party and you still—you still had to go after him! Why can't you just move on and let me be happy!?"

"But why do you have to be happy with my ex?!" Maddy snapped. "He was mine and you know it. I still loved him, and we still planned to be back together. You were the one that got in the middle of that!"

"No, I didn't! You two were apart!" Cassie shrieked at her. "When will you ever get it, Maddy? It's my time now. So you can fucking hit me, spit on me, do whatever the fuck you want. But it will never change the fact that this time I win. So just accept it and move the fuck on."

Maddy just stared at her, speechless and unable to find the ability to form words as a rebuttal. She was just silent. She stared at her, her rage-filled expression formed into a resentful one. A resentful one, but a calm one. She wasn't going to win. Karma would rear its ugly head eventually. She just scoffed, before turning the doorknob to her room. Before Maddy exited, she said. "Well, you have your cake now. Enjoy it."
