Of fright and delight
Witcher Trick or Treat 2022 October 25 Prompt: Fright
I'm a creature of the night
Can you feel the deadly fright
In your bones, down your spine?
I'll drink your blood like red wine
I'll come for you soon
On silent wings taking flight
From the hight
in the light
of the moon.
Not a kite, nor a wight, or a sprite
Screams of fright
Where I alight
Beware of my bite
Every maiden, every knight,
Beware the creatures of the night!
Jaskier hums away at the melody and lyrics for his brand new song. The absolutely ingenious and inspiring song for the upcoming fall masquerade. The highlight of the evening, naturally. And bound to become a phenomenal hit. However, there is one little problem. If he is going to perform the song himself, everybody will recognise him. Bollocks. What to do? He could teach the song to somebody else, but the chance that he will find a person who can sing even remotely as well as Jaskier, the bard, is slim, extremely slim. Moreover, every single one of his songs is dear to him like his very own child. And you would not leave your own child to somebody else, would you? No, definitely not. Well, sooner or later some people are bound to recognise him anyway, unless he keeps his mouth shut all evening, which is a physical impossibility. So, if he performs the song late at night instead of at the official opening ceremony, it will probably not do any harm, right? It is a song best sung at or after midnight anyway. Yes, together with the serving of the punch. The guests will certainly swoon with fright and delight ...
Well, there is still quite a bit of work left to do. The song needs at least another stanza or two and some sort of conclusion or resolution. Hm, which other creature of the night could he sing about besides vampires? There are so many and one scarier than the next. Must be a monster that has something to do with the moon and bites people, though, because of the chorus. Oh, yes, of course, that is simple and will work splendidly. Jaskier grabs his quill and scribbles away while humming the tune.
I'm a creature of the night
Hear your teeth chatter with fright?
In your dreams I'll scare your mind,
Eat your flesh, no bone left behind
I'll come for you soon
On silent paws ready to fight
Just out of sight
howl at the light
of the moon.
Not a kite, nor a wight, or a sprite
Screams of fright
Where I alight
Beware of my bite
Every maiden, every knight,
Beware the creatures of the night!
We're the creatures of the night,
fear no maiden, fear no knight,
Here to scar and here to mar
to scare and to tear, to bring despair
mortal fright at the dead of the night.
We'll come for you soon,
On silent wings, silent paws
Feet spiked with claws
Deadly teeth in our maws
Out of sight from the hight
in the light
of the moon
Not even an hour later, Jaskier is highly satisfied and delighted with his song. Only the resolution is missing still. Something that will help the people sleep at night in spite of the - at least imaginary - possibility of deadly creatures of the night lurking about in front of their windows or under their beds. Jaskier's face lights up with a sudden idea. Not something, but someone that will help! Grinning like a cheshire cat that has just eaten the pudding the bard adds one last stanza. Quite a tricky one, however, as he is undoubtedly a genius, he manages to find the perfect words and rhymes in record time. Geralt will love this ...
Beware you creatures of the night
Best take flight without a fight
Get out of sight!
Here to slash and to behead,
to stab and kill you dead
One man to slay, hold monsters at bay
One man without fright to the people's delight
He'll come for you soon
On silent feet at dead of night
Sword shining bright with silver's might
in the light
of the moon
Toss a coin to your Witcher, oh valley of Toussaint, oh valley of Toussaint, oh
Toss a coin to your Witcher, oh valley of wine ...
