If someone had asked Kaito when he first became addicted to pain medication, he wouldn't be able to answer. Because the truth was, he didn't know. For him, it felt like one day he wasn't addicted and then the next, he couldn't live without the painkillers. His best bet was the Sun Halo heist, though, when he had to take painkillers as a temporary solution to the searing pain in his side. And after that, whenever he felt the pain start to return, he took painkillers. It wasn't too much at first, but eventually, he just had to keep taking them. It just wouldn't stop.

Jii found out. He had to at some point, since he was Kaito's accidental supplier, after all. He had bought the painkillers for the sole sake of if Kaito got injured during heists, but then he realized that they were running out just a little too fast. Or maybe, a lot too fast. He confronted Kaito and after the boy admitted it, Jii confiscated the painkillers. All of them.

Now, Kaito realized, he was going through withdrawal.

He lay in bed, feeling too hot for it to be healthy or normal. At first he thought he was sick, then he tested his blood pressure and realized that no, maybe he wasn't. Maybe this was the effects of getting off the painkillers. He hadn't been able to sleep last night, and just recently, he had vomited into the bucket he left beside his bed. All symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

His whole body hurt. He needed the painkillers.

Kaito reached for his phone, his sweaty hands dropping it almost immediately onto the floor, almost falling into the bucket of vomit. Wincing, Kaito leaned down and picked it up again, then called Jii's number. It redirected him to voicemail. That's right… The Blue Parrot is busy right now. "Jii-chan," he said out loud. "Help, I… I need the painkillers Jii-chan. It's just…" He choked out a sob, unsure how to continue. He sent the voicemail.

It took ten painful minutes for Jii to answer the message. "Botchama, are you okay?"

"No," Kaito forced out. "Withdrawal. It…"

"Oh," Jii realized, horror clear in his voice. "I'll buy medication for that, can you hang on a little longer?"

Kaito nodded before realizing Jii couldn't see him. "Y-yeah… Are you bringing the painkillers?"

Jii breathed out. "No. That's what started this, remember? But there's medication that helps with withdrawal. I'm heading there right now."

"Thank you," Kaito muttered, then set down the phone and tried to slip into the warm embrace of sleep. Maybe that would help alleviate the pain.

The problem was, Kaito couldn't fall asleep. Insomnia, he recalled dizzedly. That's one of the symptoms of withdrawal. I'm… stuck like this, I guess… Until Jii-chan arrives.

Kaito wasn't sure how long Jii took to buy the medication, but when he arrived, Kaito felt joy inside him. Despite knowing that Jii wouldn't bring painkillers, he couldn't help but feel that spark of excitement once he saw the pill bottle. "Buprenorphine," Jii explained. "It'll help." He took out a tablet and offered it to Kaito.

Kaito was used to the feeling of pills rushing down his throat. The buprenorphine tablet didn't feel much different.
