(AN this takes place 1 week after the Sasuke retrieval squad failed their mission)
Naruto sat on a log thinking about how he failed to bring back Sasuke. How he wasn't strong enough to fulfill his promise to Sakura. his sensei Jiraiya is passed out in a tent and he promised naruto that his training would begin tomorrow. Though he wasn't thinking about his training at the moment he was thinking about what Jiraiya said after he woke up from his fight with sasuke.
"Can I really give up on Sasuke." he thought. Even though he held a rivalry with sasuke he considered him a brother. And he never once thought that sasuke would plunge a chidori right through his chest. He thought back to his first C-rank turned A-rank mission. How sasuke saved him from the demon brothers, and how sasuke almost died to Haku. He never thought the same person that jumped in front of him to protect him from Haku's senbon. Would betray the village and go to the Snake pedophile of all people. His dilemma would seem obvious to most shinobi give up on his closest friend or not give on his friend and die for getting in his way of killing itachi. But he wasn't most shinobi, unlike most shinobi he had a gigantic 9 tailed fox sealed inside his belly. Unlike most shinobi He was hated in his village for something that he can't control. As he snapped back into reality he noticed that it was almost 4:00 am he also noticed that the fire that ero-sennin set up was still going strong. His face was half illuminated and half not.
He quickly stomped on the fire making it stop. and went to his tent which was a little south from where he was currently at.

"Zetsu do you have the report of the kyuubi jinchuriki?" A monotone voice said "hai pain-sama" was the reply pain got." "good summon the other Akatsuki we need to have a long overdue meeting. Also we need your other half."
(After the Akatsuki fully assembled)
"We have some startling news" zetsu said. "First of all the kure civil war ended a week ago and the sanbi jinchuriki died so our plans are going to have to be delayed for 3 years while we wait for the sanbi to reform." Pain said. "The second thing I wanted to assemble you for is apparently the kyuubi jinchuriki is being apprenticed by Jiraiya of the sannin. While this isn't a problem for me, Itachi and Kisame the rest of you aren't sannin level." Pain said still in a monotone voice never breaking the impassive face he had.
Loud protests started filling the the room as deidera, hidan and kakuzu were protesting quite loudly. "Shut up or i'll kill all three of you." Pain threatened. With a purple eye glowing dangerously the eye had a dot with a ripple pattern going away from the dot in the center. This was the rinnegan. The three people in question stopped protesting immediately. another thing I gathered you all here is there is a spy in this group and if you don't speak up immediately I will use the king of hell to interrogate everybody here and kill the traitor." Everyone gulped at pains threat though itachi's mind was more of a whirlwind. "Did pain figure out or was it zetsu. Considering pain doesn't know that i'm the person that means that zetsu probably told him. He knew that pain was going to find out eventually so he did the most logical thing and tell the akatsuki that he was indeed the spy. "I need to tell you guys something." Itachi said in a monotone voice matching pains. "What is it itachi" Kisame said "I'm the spy." Itachi said still with an impassive face masking his whirlwind of feelings. Everyone went wide-eyed at that. they never thought that itachi would be a spy. "Well get out" Pain said in his usual monotone voice masking his shock and anger at Itachi.
(After itachi left)
"We should kill him." Hidan said "Agreed he knows to much about us and how we operate." Kakuzu agreed "No we'll not kill him." pain said firmly making everyone surprised the second time this meeting. "sorry for speaking out of turn leader-sama but may I ask why would we let Itachi live he knows to much about us and he might tell the leaf in fact I wouldn't put it past them if they set this entire thing up. To get information on us." The sasori said not wanting to believe that his leader would do something as reckless as this.
"Sasori do you really think the leaf village is going to trust itachi he slaughtered the entire uchiha clan in one night. Why would they believe itachi? also the secret that itachi died along with the sandiame." Pain asked trying to get the members of akatsuki to understand why he's making this decision. "Also once word spreads around that itachi is no longer in akatsuki all 5 great nations are going to be looking for his head either to gain the sharingan or to eliminate a problem that should've been dealt with long ago" Pain added. "I have a plan. zetsu send your clone to watch itachi's every move send a report once a week and if itachi does try to send information to the hokage kill him. Understood zetsu." "Hai leader-sama." Zetsu said
