Chapter 1 - Oh, What a Beautiful Morning/Surry with a Fringe on Top

Scene: In front of Aunt Ellie's farm. Aunt Eller and Curly are having a conversation. Judd walks in.

Curly: Good morning, Judd

Judd: Good morning, yourself.

Curly: Is that any way to treat me after I have been so nice to you?

Judd: You are only nice to me in public. Whenever, it is just us two alone, you treat me like dirt.

Curly: Really? Why would you say anything like that?

Judd: For one thing, you physically attack me. It may be minor, but you give me wedgies. You also have a smile when you do it.

Curly: Why don't you fight back?

Judd: I do, but it never seems to work.

Curly: I can't help it, that you hit like a girl. I'll tell you what. I'll be nice to you in private. I'll just treat you like dirt in public.

Judd: I don't like getting beat up. Wait a minute. What did you say?

Curly: I was nice to you in public to make myself look charitable in front of an audience. I think you're a jerk. I'll be nice to you in private, instead. That way I won't make myself look bad, by associating with losers like you.

Judd says nothing, but goes to the hen house to do his job.

Eller: You should be nicer to Judd. He's the best farm hand I ever had. He has some unique talents that will make him very useful.

Curly: I don't see any.

Eller: How do you think I got this nice farm. I am the town shrink. I am all about helping people. He can become very useful.

Laurie comes out of the house.

Curly: Do you want to go with me to the dance?

Laurie: Too late. I already agreed to go with Judd.

Curly: That scum bucket. I thought we were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Laurie: You took so long asking me, that I just agreed to go with him. I know he's a creep, but I'll treat him like royalty. I believe he has some potential.

Curly: Your decision. I'll just go with your Aunt Eller.

Curly walks away.
