Notes: For Flufftober - Soulmate AU

Beloved Soul

Kara lost a lot of things when her world died. Her people, her family, her culture... and possibly her soulmate.

Kryptonians were known to occasionally have what were called soulmates. Not every Kryptonian. And it wasn't like they believed they weren't whole without a soulmate, whether they had one or not. But some people were born with souls shaped in such a way that they fit together, stronger that way than apart.

It was said that soulmates glowed upon meeting each other, igniting a feeling within both that neither could deny. It wasn't necessarily romantic, the way many humans assumed it had to be. But soulmates were fated to be incredibly important parts of each others lives.

And soulmates ran in Kara's family. Her parents were soulmates. Her grandmother on her mother's side had a platonic soulmate, as had both grandparents on her father's side. Kal's father had a soulmate, though their relationship had been... complicated. Kara hadn't been quite sure they'd liked each other.

But the idea of there being someone - or possibly someones - out there who'd love and accept her for who she was... it was even more appealing now that she was one of the last few Kryptonians alive. Yet the very reason she wished for a soulmate now more than ever... was the very reason Kara likely didn't have one.

Life on Earth was, usually, really quite nice. But sometimes Kara would be reminded of all she'd lost and...

And no matter how well things were going for Kara, nothing could hold back her feelings of sadness.

Today was one of those days.

Sitting alone in a cafe, Kara munched on a croissant. It was buttery and perfect and normally it'd make her so happy. But today... today she was feeling all alone. A deep, aching loneliness that not even calling her mom or her sister could soothe away.

"Hi, it's a little full in here," came a lovely voice, tearing Kara's attention away from the food that was failing to comfort her. "Mind if I sit here?"

"It's all yours," Kara said, looking up at the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen.

"I'm Lena," she said, holding out her hand to shake Kara's.

Reaching up to accept the handshake, she said, "Kara." And then, as their hands touched, there was a flash of light. And a feeling of rightness settled over Kara.

A feeling like she'd never be alone again.

"What was that?" Lena exclaimed, looking around.

Most everyone seemed to think the light came from outside, but Lena's gaze settled back onto Kara.

"That was... do you believe in soulmates, Lena?" Kara asked.

Lena sat down. "I've never heard anything real, but... I always liked the idea. Are you trying to say we're soulmates?" She sounded amused. And disbelieving.

"Well, the world I come from believed in them. Because when we meet ours, we glow. Just like that. I thought after my home world was destroyed... I thought I'd never find mine. But here you are. It doesn't... have to mean anything. If you don't want it to. But I hope you'd like it to mean something."

"You're an alien?" Lena asked, shocked.

Kara nodded.

Lena, hesitantly, reached out and took Kara's hand again over the table. "No more light show?"

"It only happens once," Kara explained.

"Okay, so... soulmates. Tell me more about what that's supposed to mean," Lena asked.

Smiling, Kara did.

And it's not like having a soulmate fixes everything. Kara still has bad days where everything she lost seems to weigh on her awfully.

But Lena's there now, to hold her together when Kara felt like she was falling apart.

In turn, Kara does the same for Lena. Each lending each other strength and reminding one another that no matter the hardships they've suffered, there's someone there who loves them dearly.

They're never, ever alone.
