Luxury I Can't Afford

Kate hasn't slept with anyone in a while, between her collage and trying to figure out how to help out with Bishop Securities, and not disappoint her mom in the process and do her best to support her engagement, not to mention her archery tournaments, she didn't have much time to go out and meet new people.

But when her friends dragged her out for a night clubbing and she caught the eye of one of the most attractive women she'd ever seen, and when that woman complimented her in the thick Russian accent, Kate didn't have to think twice about bringing the gorgeous blonde home.

Unfortunately the blonde, Yelena as she told her, was gone the next morning. It was a shame because Kate thought they had a nice connection. Yelena seemed really smart and funny, she was witty, she was strong and graceful like a dancer.

Kate hoped to see her again. And she did, just not in the way she expected. In the last way she expected.

In all fairness no one ever expects to meet their one-night stand on a rooftop while they're trying to kill your kind-of mentor and almost-definitely-friend. Kate would have shot that arrow, she would have shot the arrow if not for those piercing green eyes looking back at her.

So yeah, Kate's day was not going well at all.

She just wanted to rest a little. Then in the morning she could start to figure things out.

"Kate Bishop." Kate's reflexes, as fast as they might be, were still no match for Yelena who caught the hot sauce bottle being thrown at her head, "Hi." The assassin almost sang as she smiled.

"Yelena." Kate clenched and unclenched her fists, not sure how to approach this situation. Luckily Yelena seemed to make that choice for her.

"I made mac and cheese for you, little hawk. Eat up, that fight was very long." Yelena just took set the pot of food on the table and waited for Kate. She acted like she didn't just try to kill Clint, like they were so familiar with each other that she can just make herself at home at Kate's place.

Well they are a little bit familiar with each other. Kate told Yelena some things about herself the night they slept together. She was honest. Apparently Yelena didn't see it fit to extend Kate the same courtesy.

"What the hell Yelena?!" Kate's upset tone of voice didn't seem to throw Yelena off in the slightest, "You just tried to kill me."

Yelena looked like Kate stepped on a puppy and then a kitten, downright horrified at the accusation, "I did not try to kill you. A: I put you on a wire to remove an obstacle. And B: stop being so defensive." Yelena's attitude only made Kate's anger rise.

"I think I have every right to be. You charm your way into my bed, we fuck each other's brains out, you leave with no way for me to contact you, and then you show up as a bloodthirsty vigilante and try to kill both me and my mentor." She paused for a second, then her eyes widened with both horror and betrayal, "Oh my god... I told you about looking up to Hawkeye... did you... did you sleep with me just to get to Clint?"

"No." It was the first time Yelena hardened her voice since the conversation started. Not only her voice but also her expression, "I would never toy with you in that way. I told you I am not a fan of one-night stands. I was hoping we could go on a few dates actually, you're really funny and I'd love to get to know you more."

Before the rooftops those words would have made Kate swoon. They still made her cheeks warm, but she wasn't sure if anger was also a part of it. It probably was.

"Something tells me you know quite a bit about me already." It made sense given Yelena line of work.

"You are right. But I want to know other things. Things I can't look up in a database. Like the things you told me that night. Your favorite music, how you have only one fork, which is a crime by the way, how you wanted to become a singer when you were younger. And I would love to learn more if you let me." For the first time Kate saw something more than joking, flirty banter from Yelena. It did things to her. She hated that it did things to her. Things that made her want more of this honest side of her.

At least she hoped she was being honest. A small part of her dared to hope. The other, much bigger part, was still angry.

"And then what? You expect me to forget everything else? That you lied to me? I don't sleep with liars and manipulators Yelena." It seemed that those words struck a specific kind of cord in the Black Widow assassin.

The kind of cord that made her eyes gloss over cold, that made her serious expression look deadly, that made her clench and unclench her first in her stride over to Kate.

A few steps later and Kate was with her back to the wall, with Yelena inches away from her. She still looked so damn hot. Maybe even hotter then before. How and why?!

Well Kate wasn't going to give her the satisfaction of knowing that. She stared Yelena down, welcoming her challenge.

"Do not call me that Kate Bishop. You do not know anything about me." Yelena's voice matched her expression, cold and firm and sexy as hell.

"And whose fault is that?" Kate bit back, getting ready to fight if it came down to it.

Instead of a punch or a kick or yelling, Kate got a kiss. An angry kiss, but just as much of a passionate one. She gasped against Yelena's lips, her hands pushing on the assassin's shoulders, but not enough to push her away, she couldn't push Yelena away. And she could keep herself from kissing her back with just as much fiver.

Their lips, tongues and breaths mixed together, their hands wandered their bodies, mapping already familiar areas, pulling and pushing at different times. When Kate pushed Yelena away Yelena pulled her closer, sucking on her bottom lip, letting Kate catch her breath before taking it away again.

One of Yelena's thighs made it way between Kate's legs while Kate hooked her leg on Yelena's hip, her body and mind at odds with each other.

She wanted Yelena, she wanted her with almost every fiber of her being. She wanted to get to know her, to see if their relationship could go anywhere. But not with so much still hanging over their heads. Not with Yelena still...

"Wait." Kate turned her head away from the kiss, which Yelena seemed to take as invitation to latch onto the archers neck and sucking fresh marks, "No, Yelena, wait." Kate tried a firmer tone. Yelena groaned in annoyance. She backed off her hands still on Kate's body, one on her thigh and the other tangled in her hair. "Are still planning on killing Clint?"

Yelena's silence spoke volumes to Kate. With a disappointed sigh she pushed on Yelena's shoulders.

"I can't." Kate whispered into the increasing space between them.

"But you want to don't you Kate Bishop?" Kate's throat bobbed, her pleading eyes searching Yelena's face. "Then I am sorry too. You seem very fond of him, for whatever reason." Yelena kissed Kate on the forehead, it was slow and soft, her lips lingering just a little more then needed.

Kate watched as Yelena walked away and zipped up to her open window.

"Stay out of my way Kate Bishop. Please. I don't want to have to hurt you. Again." Again. Well at least she was aware that she needed to pick up at least a little piece of Kate's heart on her way out.

Yelena was warning her. Which given that Yelena was more then likely more skilled than Kate, being raised to be a living killing machine and all, the warning was an extension of kindness. And probably some of Yelena's lingering interest in Kate.

This is probably what it feels like to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Kate didn't like this feeling one bit. Especially since she knew full well that she'd run into Yelena sooner or later.

Needless to say that running into her again was fucking painful. Not just in the emotional sense either, Kate really wished that was all it ended up being. It was emotionally painful. She wasn't able to keep her mind off Yelena for long after their talk in the apartment and it only made her sloppier. But she did one good hit in, which again, much to her conflicted delight earned her a compliment from Yelena, which only made Kate fall for her more.

It wasn't until the week after spending time with the Barton's that Kate saw Yelena again.

Kate heard a series of knocks on the door of her new, kind of secret apartment. Well not really secret but at least she put in more security measures into it this time and it was in a different part of town. Kind of a shame because Kate liked the neighborhood she was in before, but she knew she had to move, after all her old place burned down quite unceremoniously.

"Kate Bishop!" Yelena had both her hands in her jacket pockets, and a big, warm smile on her face, almost beaming at Kate and at Lucky when he ran up to greet her, "Care to give me a private tour of New York?"

"Okay!" That was way too enthusiastic. Even Kate had to admit that. At least Yelena wasn't trying to kill anyone Kate loves anymore. And going by the things Clint told her it seemed like they could repair their relationship.

If Clint and Yelena could do it, then Kate and Yelena could sure as hell do it.
