The light came suddenly
Davis Motomiya found himself in the courtyard of his school, sitting on a bench, but it didn't feel like the familiar scene of kids chattering and bells ringing. However, he pushed it aside when he saw a beautiful mousy brown haired girl with long, pink gloves, a pink top of her shirt which split into white, and with yellow shorts.
"Hi Kari!", he said to her
"Oh, hi Davis! I was just looking for you!", she said as she sat down on the bench beside him.
He looked up, and his face showed the apparent shock this comment had caused him.
"Really? Why?"
He knew she would never intentionally be looking for him. Davis liked her, but she only saw him as a friend, probably because she liked the blonde haired boy in a white bucket hat with a green sleeved yellow shirt, TK Takaishi.
Kari looked down and avoided eye contact with Davis, a apparent blush on her face
"Davis, I like you."
He was so shocked he could have fell of the bench
"Really?"
"I bet you don't like me anymore, after I have rejected you so much."
Davis reached out and took her hands
"Of course I still do!"
They were leaning in, about to...
"Davis!"
The boy looked around, and saw a familiar blue and white dragon creature looking at him, clearly annoyed.
"I have been yelling at you for the past five minutes! This isn't real!"
His heart sank.
"Of course it is real, Veemon! This is my school, and this is Kari, you remember her, right?!", he retorted, clearly trying to convince himself that the obvious wasn't true.
"I'm sorry Davis, but it is not. Besides, our friends must also be in their own illusions! We have to save them!"
His friends...
Immediately, the scene shattered like glass, broken into pieces like shards.
The light appeared again
"TK! C'mon, dude, we gotta go! Our friends are in danger.
The blonde turned around, standing in front of a broken illusion of him eating dinner with his brother and his divorced parents.
"How could he do this to us?" TK asked in anger. "He is prying on our weaknesses and insecurities!"
"I know, right! We have to go save Kari, Cody, and Ken!"
They boarded raidramon and left.
"Umm, Davis, thanks for saving me.
"No problem, you're my friend after all. And, are you ok? With your illusion and all?"
"Yeah… it just made me angry that he would use our deepest desires and insecurities against us.
"I know, right? That's so not cool"
"So, how did you manage to break free from the illusion?"
"Well, Kari and I were on a bench, and she was confessing to me. But, Veemon called out to me and I realizes it wasn't real and most importantly, that my friends were in danger."
There was a moment of silence
"I guess it means I don't really care about her, right?
"Davis… that's not true.
But you wouldn't have left her so fast. I see the way you look at her, care for her, and protect her…"
"It's not like that… she's my friend, and it's what Tai would want me to do."
"Are you sure that's all it is?"
The light appeared again for a third time
"We can talk about this more later if you want, but right now we gotta save our friends"
TK nodded.
"Yeah. Thanks again, Davis"
