Chapter 1
"A Few Words About Entitlement"
I just wanna say a few words about entitlement. There are two different variants of the word that a lot of us tend to overlook. Being entitled means that you are able to earn what you work towards. For example, you could be entitled to a paycheck because you worked for it at a job or it could be that you are entitled to compensation if your flight gets canceled.
Being entitled does NOT mean that you can torment someone just because you feel like it. As a wealthy young woman who is neurodiverse, catholic and solves mysteries for the FBI, I never use my wealth to get anything I want. I'm privileged, but I have to earn the right to be privileged. You can never get anything for nothing, but sadly, not everyone embraces that idelogy.
…
That's what brought me and my friends here to Maine, where we just witnessed Christine Hargensen, one of the most entitled young girls I have ever met, just get sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for her actions that brought about the death of a young girl whom strongly connected with me from what I heard about…her name was Carrie White.
…
Carrie was a young girl who was never rich, she was just an average young girl who was frequently bullied simply because she was targeted by Christine and her friends, a group of young entitled girls called the "Mortimer Snerds." These girls were amongst the worst of the worst, who all believed that their status as rich young ladies gave them the freedom to make the lives of others miserable.
And do you know what made it worse? They caused Carrie White, who had come to mark a rite of passage that many high schoolers dream of their entire lives, to commit suicide after their ultimate prank was carried out.
…
But, I'm getting ahead of myself here. You might be wondering how this all came about? How did we get involved in investigating the suicide of this young girl?
Well, it all started on one late spring night in the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, just outside of Portland. A call came into the town's police department after a couple spotted a young woman covered in blood lying dead in a ditch not far from the high school.
"Mother of God!" the responding officer said as he pulled the police cruiser along the side of the ditch. "Come on!"
Both officers approached the young girl's body and immediately called for backup. She was covered in blood, her long prom dress was also covered in blood and her shoes were missing. The couple, an elderly couple, had stayed with the body until the cops arrived.
"We found her on the side of the road," the gentleman said. "It's Carrie White."
"You know this girl?" he asked, tears forming in the corner of his eye upon hearing the girl's name. "Rita's not gonna like this."
"Who?"
"My wife…she's a gym teacher at the high school. She told me to keep an eye on Carrie because she was being targeted. Oh, Carrie…"
As the minutes passed by, the town coroner, several more police cruisers and rescue personnel arrived on the scene. It was evident that nothing could be done for this young child.
"Dan!" cried a woman in a long black dress as she ran towards him. "Is she…?"
Nodding, Rita's husband confirmed that it was indeed Carrie. Distraught, Rita collapsed on her knees and sobbed hard.
"Why? Why?" she cried. "Carrie! Carrie!"
Dan then noticed that his wife had some traces of blood on her dress.
"It just…came out of nowhere!" she cried. "Dan, she was being recognized and all of a sudden, the blood just poured on her!"
"Recognized as what? Prom Queen?"
But Rita was too inconsolable to answer.
"Then, they showed that video, from the gym's locker room and…"
Now, some teachers often view some students as like their own son or daughter. Rita Collins, the high school's gym teacher, saw Carrie like a daughter to her.
"Hargensen?"
"Yes, Hargensen! I know it's her, Dan! I tried to stop her, but she took off with Nolan. Of all the…"
Seeing his inconsolable wife, Dan had a premonition that the FBI was going to be involved.
…
Sure enough, we were awakened in the middle of the night by the sounds of the phone ringing.
"Hello?" Fred asked groggily as I opened my eyes. "What? When? Suicide? Okay, we'll be right there."
Hanging up the phone, I saw Fred race out of bed to throw on some clothes.
"Get dressed, Daph!" he ordered throwing one of my purple dresses on the bed.
"Fred, it's 3 in the morning, what's going on?" I yawned, not wanting to be awakened so sharply.
"We're wanted now! A girl was found dead in Maine! Come on, Daphne, get dressed!"
"Frederick Herman Jones, get a hold of yourself!" I retorted sharply, getting out of bed. "Honestly!"
Still, I got dressed and leaving Shaggy, Scooby and Velma in bed, we drove to the Providence headquarters of the FBI. Upon arriving, we saw Beau, Barbara and Clarice in the lobby. Apparently, they must have all gotten the same message.
"Guys, did you hear?"
"About the suicide? We did," Beau answered in a bitter tone. "High School girl supposedly humiliated at her senior prom by having blood dumped on her."
A few moments later, the Providence FBI chief summoned us into his office and briefed on what was happening.
…
"At about 11:00pm tonight," he explained, handing each us the transcript of the phone call made to the Chamberlain Police Department. "An elderly couple called to report the discovery of a young 18 year old female lying dead on the banks of a ditch. She was wearing a long prom dress and covered in blood."
"Human blood?" I asked.
"We aren't sure, Agent Blake," the chief said. "But, from what we heard this was building up for some time."
"What do you mean?"
"The officer who responded to the call reported that his wife, a gym teacher, knew the girl. She was the frequent target of bullying from some of the students."
A sickening feeling began to form in my stomach when I heard that the girl was being bullied. I was never bullied when I was in school, but I had seen other girls bullied and some of them were even rich like me.
"My colleague at the FBI office in Portland has asked that I send you to Chamberlain to investigate the matter."
"Why us?"
"Because the detained are claiming that spirits told them to carry out what happened tonight."
Spirits? Now where have we heard that before? Oh yeah sure, Reverend Kane must have influenced them to bully a young poor girl to commit suicide. But, there was a side of me that didn't believe it, not for a second.
Evil Spirits never influence others to bully. It often goes deeper than that and I, Daphne Anne Blake, will stop at nothing to find the real culprit behind this.
