"Hang on, Peach! I'm-a coming to save you!"
Mario raced up the spiralling staircase of the tower where he was certain he would find the love of his life. He was anxious to find her up here, where he would sweep her off her feet and take her off into the sunset on horseback - or rather, on Yoshi's back. It was business as usual for the legendary hero; his princess had been kidnapped and he had come to rescue her.
As always, the Italian Plumber had been through a lot on his journey to save Peach. He had wandered over hills and descended down pipes. He had defended himself against the violent attacks of Koopa Troopas and Piranha Plants. His adventure had culminated when he had reached Bowser's castle, where he had fought an intense battle against his arch nemesis. Having just defeated his mortal enemy, all Mario wanted to do was find Peach and take her home to Mushroom Kingdom.
Mario reached the top of the tower, where he found the door to the room which Peach was held prisoner in. It was locked and he didn't have a key - but he did had super strength from all the mushrooms he had consumed on his journey to the castle. He could break this down in a heartbeat.
"Here I a-come, my dear princess!" Mario called through the keyhole. "Ready or not!"
As hard as he could, Mario punched the door with his fist. It splintered into pieces as bits of wood flew everywhere. Mario stepped into the small room beyond, looking around with a broad grin for the princess who needed him to save her.
The huge smile on his face quickly disappeared the moment he found her.
"Zelda?!"
"Oh, Mario!" Princess Zelda cried happily as she ran over to her capped rescuer. "Thank goodness you're here! I thought I was going to be stuck in this castle forever!"
Mario's jaw hung open below his bushy moustache. He stared in disbelief at the young lady - who was not the one he was here for. After travelling all this way to the castle, fighting against Bowser and his minions, he had arrived to free the wrong princess.
"Link has been taking forever to get here!" Zelda went on. "He'll get a big surprise when he finally does shows up! I didn't expect you to rescue me - but I'm so grateful you did, Mario. Thanks for saving me-"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Mario held up a gloved hand to silence Zelda. "Just a-one minute! Where's my princess?!"
"Why…" Zelda stared with confusion. "I'm your princess, Mario. You're the brave hero and I'm the princess in need of rescue-"
"No, no, no!" Mario frowned as he shook his head. "Where's my princess?"
"Oh?" Zelda exclaimed, realising who Mario was referring to. "You mean Peach?"
"Yes! Where is Peach? Is she no here?"
Zelda's face fell. She realised now that Mario had come to this castle and fought against Bowser to save Peach and not her. A fretful look crossed the face of the princess of Hyrule. She didn't know how Mario was going to react when she revealed to him where the person he was seeking was.
"Your princess is in another castle…"
"Mamma Mia!"
Having being told by Zelda those words he hated so much, Mario fell backwards as he fainted, filling the entire castle with enormously loud crashing sounds as he tumbled all the way down the spiralling staircase of the tower.
