Dark
I suppose the real difference between the two darkest wizards in wizarding history, Grindlewald and Tom Riddle, is the way they both thought. The way they calculated and the way the wizarding world calculated them.
During Grindelwald's time everything was hushed up, secrets transported in whispers. There were rumors of a dark wizard, but no one could be sure of the whereabouts and the who what when where. He was a student before my time as a teacher, a ravenclaw, talented but never noticed. He was only noticed after he rose as a dark wizard. His crimes were always similar to each other. A mass murder, the bodies all killed with the avada kedava charm. No sign, above the bodies, no trace of who had been there. All of his murders committed single-handedly.
Tom's crimes were always highly publicized, all details of the murders perfectly sketched. I taught Tom during his time at hogwarts. He was a Slytherin, recognised by the whole school as the hero who closed the chamber of secrets. He had the blood of Salazaar in his veins. School prefect, perfect grades, sweet, hardworking orphan. He had more than one reason for getting Hagrid expelled. He was a wise one. Gained his followers, kept them and killed the ones who put anything in jeopardy. You always knew when he had murdered.
Tom changed his name, Voldemort, gave him self a name in the wizarding world. And threw the dark mark in its face. He had a motive and was scarily sane. Extended his life with unicorn blood, serpent milk and the dark magic he'd been studying since his years at hogwarts. Had an aesthetic appreciation he did. Liked the crucio. First ever to use it. Grindelwald was insane. He didn't care about life, his or anyone else's. He let himself get caught and kissed the dementor before it kissed him.
Tom's motive was what drove him. He believed there was no evil, only power and those to weak to see it. He imagined his father's face on every person he murdered. He put the dark mark up for a reason. He didn't just do it to show a death, he did it to show an image of himself.
