"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."-Hebrews 11:1
"How like a winter hath my absence been
From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year!
What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen!
What old December's bareness every where!"-
William Shakespeare "Sonnet 97"
Scully leaned back into the sofa. She took the offered mug of decaffeinated hot tea as her Mom sat down beside her. She let the heat from the mug seep into her hands as she clasped it, almost burning her.
"Thanks," Scully said smiling slightly.
Scully had just told her Mother all that had happened in the past few weeks: Mulder's abduction, her pregnancy, her new partner. It had been a lot to tell and a lot for Maggie Scully to take in. There had been smiles, there had been hugs, but most of all there had been tears.
"Mom, there's something that I need to ask you about. When we were looking for Mulder, um, someone insinuated that Mulder never trusted me, that he never really had any faith in me...."
Maggie Scully shook her head. "Dana, honey, you know that's not true. Remember that case you had where you got sick due to those subliminal messages. You came here to hid from Mulder. You accused him of never trusting you and for hurting you. Do you remember what he said, Dana? He said you were the only one he ever trusted. That's the truth."
"Oh, Mom," said Scully fighting back a wave of tears.
"I also remember a time when you were taken from me and it was Mulder who was sitting where you are now. He felt as you do now-frustrated and helpless. He blamed himself for your abduction. Mulder who have done anything, anything, to bring you back. Eventually you were brought back to us and it was uncertain whether or not you would live or die."
Maggie paused collecting her memories and pushed past the painful feelings associated with that time. It has been a mother's nightmare.
"From what Melissa told me at the time, it seems Mulder was going to avenge you by taking the lives of those who had done this to you."
Tears streamed down Scully's face as her Mother continued. She had never know this about her partner.
"But in the end he choose to be here by your side. We all thought you were dying and it was his last chance to be by your side. You were that important to him, Dana, after working with him only about a year and a half-probably before that too."
"I don't know if I'm strong enough, Mom, to carry on without him or if I even want to," cried Scully, "but carrying on with the X-Files is the only way to find him."
Maggie wrapped her daughter in a hug and kissed her on the cheek.
"The faith that save you, brought you back to us, will save you now. I don't want to give you false hope and say that Mulder will be back, but I hope he will and soon. We don't always understand why all things happen, but I do know that you have been changed irrevocably because of knowing Mulder. These past years I have seen you take the best parts of him and incorporate them into your self. And that is why he will never truly be gone. He lives in you."
Mrs. Scully held her daughter until the tears subsided, and then for awhile after that.
