Sirius's Wish

Sirius quietly walked down the boy's dormitory stairs to the Gryffindor Common Room. The only two figures in the room were Lily and James. Sirius watched them in the shadows, wishing that he was another.

Lily and James were cuddled together near the fire, wrapped in a blanket of scarlet and gold. James's arms were around Lily, almost in a protective way. James brought one of her hands to his lips and kissed it lightly. Lily smiled as she rest her head in the crook of his neck, and closing her eyes in comfort.

Sirius continued to gaze at the couple. His heart shattered at the sight. Why can't I be James? How I would love to hold her in my arms, kiss her sweet lips, touch her silky red hair. He is so lucky, why can't I be? James kissed Lily's cheek and cradle her even closer. They are so in love. Sirius thought. If only that could be me... Sirius looked at Lily's beautiful face and realized something. She was happy. That's all that should matter-- she was happy, even if it was with another.

"Padfoot?"

Sirius met his gaze with James.

"Are you all right?" James asked. Sirius looked at him, and then to Lily, who was smiling. Sirius returned the smile.

"Never better."
