Author's Note: Heero, realizing that being the perfect soldier isn't everything there is to life, writes a poem about how he would change if Duo left his side. Within this composition, the Japanese stresses to his lover that he was always fond of everything from his childish antics to his ability to smile when things were looking grim.

Disclaimer: Yaoi between Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell. Angst with romance.

Chosen Angel

If you should die today

There will be a place in heaven for you to stay

High up beyond the stratosphere

Where you'll look down upon me here

And with your flawless features smiling beautifully

God shall bestow an extravagant set of wings upon me

Making you his chosen angel

So you'll never experience the pain of Hell

Jokingly, you had referred to yourself as being nothing but a plaything of the reaper

But I knew you dreamt of greater things, your life's meaning was definitely deeper

Somehow you always found the strength to smile

Showing everyone you possessed the pure heart of a child

Though I thought your silly jester's mask was immature

That natural reflex made me see all the suffering you were able to endure

Even when I'd turn my back on you so callously

You shrugged it off and flashed a trademark grin at me

There were also those times when I heard you call my name

Then I saw you no different than an enemy, to me you were all the same

As tears fill my eyes

I finally realize

Everything you meant to me and more

Although the rain outside continues to pour

Your hushed voice enters my head

Ushering me not to cry, but instead

To understand that it won't rain all the time

That I'm not the one responsible for you perishing before your prime

Be happy…your last wish is thankfully something I can make come true

Think of you getting your wings, that's all I have to do

Sitting atop a feather soft cloud

Or dancing with celestial spirits, content and proud

Perhaps even strumming a harp while singing a merry tune

Creating a truly magical moon

Chosen angel, lovely angel

Before the chimes fade and cease to ring from your bell

Could you save a place for me

So that I may bathe in your heavenly glow for eternity?

Chosen angel, lovely angel

My promise to you I shall keep

So long as I live, even while I sleep

Could you save a place beside you among the stars to stay

If you should die today?
