NIGHT HAG

by Cloudtrader

Suffocated.  Dying.  He was awake but he couldn't move.  Someone sat on his chest, cutting off his air, killing him.  An evil presence.  Panic, terror, he was going to die...

Harry sat up in bed with a gasp, frantically pushing away the horrible presence... that wasn't there.  He groped for his glasses on the bedside table while sucking sweet air into his lungs.  With his glass on he could see that he was alone.  He sighed and lay back down.  This again.

It had started in his second year at Hogwarts.  It was always the same; he'd wake up, feel some horrible THING near it, feel it sitting on his chest so he couldn't breathe, and then he'd wake all the way up and find that he was alone.  It didn't happen all the time.  Sometimes he went months without experiencing the terror.  But it always came back.

At first, he'd thought it might have something to do with Voldemort, but his scar never hurt when it happened.  He'd finally told Hermione and Ron about it in their third year.  Hermione had found reference to the phenomenon.  Apparently, it was something Muggles called hypnogogia.  Due to heredity or stress, some people woke up paralyzed and unable to breathe, with the sense that there was a presence in the room with him.  There was nothing to do to stop it, but it wasn't actually harmful.  Lots of people down through the centuries had experienced it and attributed it to demons and the like before modern research had discovered the real cause.  Muggles had even thought witches caused it!

It was nothing.  Harry tried to relax but then he froze.  There was a pressure on the bed.  Someone was here!

"Hello Harry."  Ginny?  Maybe it was witches after all…
