Title; Blame

Notes: Written as an alternative outcome to " What kind of Day has it been " and " In the Shadow of Two Gunmen " Thanks to moony for letting me write this in the back of her planner also I like josh but this is what GCSE physics lessons have driven me to. Also thanks to my non-WW-liking m8s who read this and liked it for what it is.

Cj stood at the door of Toby's office waiting for an appropriate moment to interrupt his emergency meeting. " Cj " Toby said softly, she jumped at the closeness of voice and realised that he was stood right next to her. "Yeah?" she replied distractedly, coming to her senses. Toby studied her troubled face and understood without words. "I'll be there in five minutes." He squeezed Cj's arm as she acknowledged his words and turned back into his office.
The bullpen was eerily quiet as Cj made her way back to her own office. She was glad she didn't need to tell Toby why she needed him with her. It wasn't unreasonable to want some support when she got the phone call about how Josh's surgery had gone. She sat down at her desk and watched Gail swim happily around her bowl.
There was a knock at the door and Cj looked up to see Toby smile wearily and make his way over to sit on her sofa. She managed a weak smile back at him, her eyes returning to the fish bowl. A foreboding silence filled the office as Cj and Toby stared into space. They both leapt out of their skins as the shrill rings of the phone broke the silence. Toby moved to stand behind Cj and watched intently as she slowly lifted the receiver.
"Cj Cregg" she answered, her normal phone voice replaced by a nervous tone only Toby recognised as hers.
" It's me Cj" Leo's voice came through the handset. " How are you holding up?" he enquired though he new the answer.
"I.we're fine" Cj's voice wavered as she looked up at Toby stood silently next to her.
They were fine compared to Josh - they weren't lying in surgery hooked up to machines keeping them alive having just been shot by an extremist group. Cj and Toby had both been there but they had escaped with bruises and torn clothes.
Tears pricked at the back of Cj's eyelids and rolled silently down her cheeks as she thought of her friend lying in the OR.
"Cj" Leo repeated into the receiver as Toby moved closer to her and gripped her shoulder in support.
"How is he?" she stammered in reply.
"Is Toby with you?" Cj read the devastation in Leo's voice and let out a sob. Toby put both his hands on her shoulders.
" I'm so sorry " Leo said gravely his voice barely audible as Cj confirmed that Toby was indeed with her.
"He..Josh.there were complications.he died in the OR"
Leo managed to say before his voice broke and gave way to uncontrollable sobs. Cj sobbed back into her end of the phone and for a moment they sat listened to each other on either end of the line. Toby gave Cj's shoulder a gentle squeeze to remind her to finish the call.
Cj managed to compose herself a little before asking Leo if he wanted her and Toby to tell the rest of the staffers.
" No they'll all be on their way in .. We'll tell them together, Donna is with Abbey so I'll be back in a half hour."
"Ok " Cj replied and listened as the line clicked dead.
She felt Toby's arms around her shoulders as she held her head in her hands and a fresh wave of tears made their appearance down her cheeks.
