Love by Scratch

The candle flickered and was finally extinguish by the light gust of air that rolled across the room. The hammock bobbed and swayed with the movement inside, and the body rolling over, tousled the mop of auburn hair. It let out a diminutive sigh.

The soaring man strode into the room, and stared around. He strolled over to the lying figure, and bent down. She was so beautiful, so wonderful and she was his. As he stroked her face she stirred, awoken by the soft touch. She smiled, and with her hands reached up to touch his face.

"Daddy," she whispered, as her tiny hands came to rest on his cheeks. She pulled herself up and engulfed her father in a hug. Without a word he sat down and she crawled onto his lap. She was asleep again quickly, and soon there was another movement from outside the room.

With feathery footsteps another woman entered. She ambled over to the man and his daughter, but didn't utter a word. A man and his daughter. Her man and her daughter. She smiled, peaceful after so many years of anger and anxiety. Slipping down, she sat next to the other two, kissing her daughter on the cheek. He turned to look at her, and for a few seconds their eyes were interlocked. They were broken apart when he leant in to kiss her, tenderly. She smiled and whispered in his ear.

"I love you."

"I love you too," was all the response that was needed, and no more words were exchanged as she leant into his side and let her eyelids drop.
