As I awoke in the bright hospital room, I didn't know where I was. One minute, I was in a car with my mom and my sister, Maya. The next I'm here. What had happened? Slowly it came flooding back to me. The horns blaring, Maya's screams, screeching brakes and then the crash. I reached up to touch my eye, but a thick gauze pad was covering it. The first thing I saw was a nurse with curly-red hair standing over my bed. She was writing something down on a chart. She peered down at me and smiled. One of those warm, friendly smiles that people flash at little kids.
"Hey sweetie, you finally woke up."
"How's my mom? And Maya?"
The nurse's face turned grim and sad. "I was hoping I wouldn't be the one you asked, but... Neither of them made it."
"So they're...."
"We did everything we could."
"No. No! No no NO! They can't be dead! You have to try again! They can't die!"
"I'm sorry. But please, calm down, there's more." Tears stung my eyes, but I stopped screaming long enough to listen. "In the accident you hurt your eye badly. You're going to need a retina transplant or else you may very well go blind. Your sister is the only immediate donor, so its kind of like a twisted way of carrying your sister around with you." Jeez, it is pretty twisted. But then I was angry.
"So that's it?! My mother, and my sister, are both dead, and all that happened to me is I hurt my eye?!
To make a long story short, I got the operation and something went wrong. My mitochondria evolved and I acquired the parasite powers I have now. Something like that happened to Melissa. I still have so many questions. Most of them will probably remain unanswered, but hey...At least I'm alive. I guess.
