Summary: Was anyone else upset at the end of "Sleeper"? Poor Spike was right there when
they were talking about him. This is just the way I would have liked it to end.

Spike sat quietly in the chair listening. Listening to what they were saying
about him. About the thing. About the monster. Did they not know he was right
there? That he had feelings too?

"I'm gonna have to get close to Spike," she said. Oh, how he wanted her
close. He needed her to care about him. He needed it to be true, and it certainly
was, but not for the reasons he had hoped for.

"You blew it mate," said the blonde across from him. He was lounging on
the couch with his hands behind his head. "I had a plan for you and you blew it."

"S'not my problem anymore. I want nothing to do with you!" Spike said
turning his head.

"Oh, piffle!" snorted the blonde, "You're mine, mate. Nothing you can do
about that. I'm inside of you, squirmin and burnin. I'm your fire. I'm what keeps
you going."

"That's a lie!" Spike shouted. The gang turned their heads in the direction
of the sound. "I'm a good man! I've always been a good man! Even in the
darkness I saw the light. Was drawn to it. Fought for it. You can't make me!
Can't make me yours! All dark and empty! It's mine again! The spark," his voice
quieted to a sad declaration, "mine. Hers. Ours." He looked hopelessly at Buffy.
"Haven't I been through enough… for her? Always for her." The blonde began
to laugh deeply, "Goddamnit just leave me alone already! I won't do it! Won't be
yours!"

"Like you have any say-so in the matter. Look at you. You're even battier than
Drusilla. Think they'll believe you Spike? Huh?" he said inching towards him,
"Think they'll keep you alive? When all hell has broke loose and I'm winning, do
you honestly think they'll give a piss about you?" Spike's head hung low. "Right.
You'll always be beneath them," he crooned. "She'll never love you…"

"Spike," Buffy's voice came soft and concerned from behind his shoulder. He felt
her hand set lightly on his back before he turned to face her. His blue eyes met
with hers with such intensity she inhaled sharply. Letting her breath out slowly
and calmly she whispered, "We're here. Just know… we're here." The
silhouettes of the remaining Scoobies nodded in agreement. Their faces showed
concern and compassion. Even Xander gave him a look of strength and support.
He gathered his composer and let the blanket that had been covering him drop to
the floor as she took his hand. "I'm here," she said looking deep in his eyes.

And for once, he knew it was true.
