Holding the baby
"Oh man, how'd I get my self into this" groaned Harper as he held the screaming baby; it seamed to Harper that the child had not stopped screaming since she was handed to Harper much to his protects.
Harper held the baby at arms length for the first 10 minutes he had no idea what to do with a baby he didn't have and younger brothers or sisters. An hour latter Harper was walking around rocking the baby but it was still wailing; why, why couldn't Trance or Beka do this, and didn't Neitzchean live for having children, why did he have to be stuck with the baby, why was he the only one free?
A ray of hope struck Harper maybe Trance had finished showing the dignitaries round and could help rescue him. "Andromeda is Trance still with our gests" asked Harper "No" she replied "she is currently in hydroponics watering her plants."
Harper headed to hydroponics help would at last be at hand. Or that was what he thought. Upon his arrival Trance had insisted she was to busy and didn't know anything about babies anyway. Harper was convinced she was lying she could take care of a plant but not a baby? Harper couldn't even keep a plant alive; Trance had banned him from keeping plants in this room; they all died of neglect.
Harper took the baby to engineering in desperation the baby may not like it there, but Harper was at his most comfortable here. He relaxed a little and started pointing this and that out to the baby she stopped crying and seemed to settle. "So you want to be an engineer do you?" he cooed to the baby, which sighed contently. Harper pointed out everything explaining its function even though the baby could not possibly understand.
An hour later Harper had explained the entire contents of the room and now held a sleeping child. He breathed a sigh of relief, and carried the bay to his quarters were he created a bed of pillows with his free hand. As Harper lay the baby down its eyes immediately sprang open and she started crying again. "Shit" muttered Harper followed by a groan when he realised he just swore in front of a child.
Ten minutes later the baby was asleep once more he tried again, "whaa" went the baby the instant he lowered it. 30 minutes later Harper had given up and went back to wandering the ship pointing out random things to the baby; Beka heard this when escorting her guests around she just shock her head and laughed even she didn't understand half the stuff he said the baby stood no chance.
After completing his own tour of the ship with his special guest, Harper was knackered the baby to was fast asleep too; Harper didn't have the energy to go back to his quarters so he just sat in the mess cradling the baby in his arms; this was how Tyr found him 10 minutes later fast asleep. Tyr smiled inwardly the Boy would make a good father he thought then he left the pair to sleep.
20 minutes later Dylan found Harper still asleep curled up with the baby, he smiled at the scene, "Harper" he gently called the a bit louder shaking his shoulder "Harper" Harper awoke A'lanna's mum is ready to take her home now he said.
Harper walked with Dylan back to the child's mother when the time came he found himself reluctant to hand over the baby. He told her mother all about A'lanna's passion for engineering and even offered to baby sit anytime. Well thought Dylan he certainly changed his tune maybe the experience did him good, and passing the baby to Harper also meant he didn't have to deal with it, he was a star ship captain after all he thought!
