Data may have been killed while destroying the weapon that was intended to destory Earth, but he was not gone completely. His memories lived on in his "brother", named Before. As the days went by, Before began to explore Data's memories and relive his neverending quest for humanity. One memory that caught Before's interest was Data's attempt to reproduce, and the "birth" of his daughter. The memory sparked a project, one that would, if successful, resurrect Data.

The android worked almost incessantly at mastering holographic technology. With the successes of Voyager's EMH in expanding beyond his programming, Before was certain that a holographic Data would work.

It took many weeks of work, but the holographic version of Data was finally complete. Before was ready to reveal his masterpiece to the rest of the crew. He'd obtained a mobile emitter for Data earlier (the technology Voyager had brought back had been studied extensively, and prototype mobile emitters had been released). Before's brother lived once again.

The turbolift doors whooshed open. Before stepped out, followed by Data. No one looked up until Data spoke: "I'm back." The looks on the crew's faces were priceless.
