Bad Company, Chapter 1
***On Board Andromeda : A few hours before the journey.***
After Dylan told the crew about the conference's course , everybody went to their quarters. Trance, Harper and Beka went to the Harper's room (on the Andromeda). When Trance and Harper were alone, Trance started to talk.
- Why?
- Why what? - Harper didn't understand the question at first.
- You can go. I can't. Why?
- Ah, it's easy. Because I'm a genius. And we always need my genius.
Harper grinned (an ear-to-ear smile) at his own joke, but Trance didn't smile. Instead, she was sad. Not sad. Angry. Very, very
angry. She couldn't kept the things inside.
- It isn't fair! When you need my insight, I'm good. I'm okay. But when some important thing is happening, I'm not good. Then you
don't need me. Because it isn't for me to decide these things. Dylan tells me: Stay here! And I stay, because I obey his orders without question. But now this has to end! I should have the same choice as you!
- Trance, I'm sorry but...
- You don't need to be sorry for me! You believe, what?, that you're funny? Before, you enjoyed your joke, but you didn't even care about my feelings. My feelings, that you hurt. You don't care about anybody or anything! You are so selfish!
- I think you're confusing me with Tyr!
- Harper.
This conversation was making Harper lose his composure.
- Listen to me, Trance! If you want to go with us, speak with Dylan, not with me! I can't answer this question. I wasn't very concerned with this ceremony. I'll go, because Dylan told me to. Because he needs me. - said Harper with a light smile, and he
looked down at his shirt and jeans.
- That isn't what I'm talking about! You still can't understand? The problem is, that you are just...just an...
- Ah, so that is your problem! That, I'm just an engineer. A simple engineer. A nobody. You were going to tell me that? No? I don't care! You wanted to tell me that. I know!
Trance didn't reply. She wasn't be able to speak. Harper's eyes blazed with anger. He cast a look down his shirt and jeans, and he walked close by Trance.
- What is it now? Why don't you tell me something? Ah, I understand! Trance, Miss Perfect doesn't talk with people like me. In the end I'm just a nobody.
Trance was very angry. But she was right, because Harper was an egoist, he just didn't see that.
- Harper, I. - Trance tried to say something, but Harper cut her off.
- Answer my question! Do you think that about me? That what?, I'm a good-for-nothing and I haven't a reason to go to the
Genesis?
- I don't.
- And you call yourself my friend?! A Neitzschean would be a better friend, than you!
- But, Harper!
Harper really had enough of Trance now.
- Trance, please go away. You know where's the door is, friend.
But, Trance kept steady.
- Just beat it!
Trance didn't move, because she felt the presence of trouble. She knew, that Harper wasn't really angry with her, just that he wanted to keep something secret from her. And that really scared Trance. It appeared that he wasn't well.
Harper gave Trance a firm glance. Trance slowly walked out from the room. But she wasn't calm.
But, deep in his heart he knew, that Trance was right. He was selfish, and he needed to change. After Trance left the room, Harper wanted to be alone.
- Andromeda?
- Yes?
- Engage privacy mode.
- Understood. Privacy mode engaged by authorisation of Seamus Harper. - said the hologram.
"Thanks, Rommie."
Harper lay back in his bed. He felt tired. And weak. Oh yes, he felt so weak. He turned his head at right, and he saw the glass statue,
that he had got on his previous birthday from Trance. Maybe it was his last birthday. He took it in his hand, but he became angry again. But why? And who made him angry? It's easy.
"Trance." - answered himself.
"No. Not Trance."
He didn't know the answer. Trance was truthful. And she was right. Yes. He hadn't reason to be angry. But he was. He was angry because he was hurt. He was afraid. He was afraid of the truth. He was dying.
***Outside Harper's room***
Trance stood outside the room. She was afraid. But she was afraid, because she felt that the trouble was coming nearer and nearer. She was anxious for Harper. Trance wanted to know what was the matter with Harper. Because it was something, just she didn't know what.
Beka appeared in the corridor.
- Hi Trance! What are you doing here? Why aren't you in your quarters?
Beka didn't know anything. Trance looked sadly at Beka, who immediately knew the reason for Trance's expression. They were her crew, and she knew everything about them.
- Oh no, you had an argument again.
- No Beka, it's worse.
- It's worse? What did he do now? He said something about your new style? But why? I love your new hairstyle, and your clothes.I don't understand Harper. He has changed. Oh well, never mind!
- Beka. - Trance cut in her ramblings, but Beka didn't hear her.
- He's acting strange, furious and...
- Beka!
- Oh, sorry Trance.Tell me the problem...
- I had an fight with Harper, and said something really bad.I hurt Harper's feelings. - Trance started crying.
- I didn't want to hurt him...if something happens now, it will be my fault.
- Calm down, Trance! Harper isn't the type to bear a grudge. - said Beka cheerfully.
At that moment Rommie's android appeared in the corridor..
